A note about pictures and rental cars

I know this isn't something that has happened... yet. I suggest as a courtesy those that post pictures of rental cars on the track consider blacking out the license plates. I haven't posted my pictures yet, simply because I haven't had the chance, but I will be blurring out the rental plates that appear in any of my pictures. The reasons for doing this are obvious.

It might be a little late for mentioning this, but I figured I'd make the point anyway. I think in the future, tape should definitely be put over the plates before running on the track. We probably would have done it this time if anyone had thought about it. We were too busy trying to ghetto mod them to think rationally about these things.

What I want to know is.... did anyone return a car and have them ask why you were driving 120mph in a circle?

They sneak GPS systems on some of them, I've heard of (saw it on Dateline) people getting hit with a $200 or more bill when they return the rental car because they crossed state lines which was against the fine print on the rental contract. Just curious to how closely they watch those things.

From everything I've read, these cases have been shut down in court. I don't think it's a real concern- yet. I am sure it will be at some point. If any car would've had it, I'd think the Jag would. It had that crappy NeverLost GPS in it, too.

Yeah, I think the courts have thrown them out because of some sort of infringement of privacy or something like that. Whatever... it works! Last year's Galant in LA had the neverlost (which I thought worked decently... better than my crappy-always-losing-satellites-always-recalculating garmin 2610!) and I thought of these cases where the car company tracks you. I took the chance and had the car on the track. I set the thing at the beginning of the day to go to Mike K's house and I heard the thing beeping away the whole time on-track telling me to make a left or right and telling me I was off-route I wouldn't have had to worry about them wondering why I was going 120MPH because the thing only got up to a top speed (on the track anyway) of 75. What a POS that car was!

I have returned rentals with the spare on because the tire blew out. On a Gran Prix with about 800 miles on it and shaved front tires. The guy was shocked (as was I! "What a horrible alignment" I told the guy as I held back the laughter

Ray's GPS kept telling him "no" when he pushed the wrong buttons and "yes" when he hit the right buttons. it made more "no" replies than "yes", which is the story of ray's life...

When Greg turned in his rental from 'bama, we made sure to release all the air in the tire and he told them he had a blowout on the freeway and it almost killed him. the rental company apologetically gave him a free day for his "trouble". we had to go somewhere else because we were giggling our asses off...
