SCC had a battle of the project cars event at Streets of Willow last week and I got to drive the new coilovers and adjustable swaybars on Dave Colemans B13.
I really liked them, the ride was decent and the cars balance was perfect, the car could rotate with trail braking and it was not too tail happy as to get beginner drivers in trouble.
The spring rates and damping seemed well coupled and their was sufficent wheel travel.
If you are a serious autocrosser, you could run a tad bit of rear tow out to get a more agressive rotation.
Considering the price of AGX/GC or AGX Hypercoils, this is a great setup and an excellent value.
how do they feel? tein also came out with a super street coilover as well

what is teh rates on the progress springs? and are the dampers adjustable?
350 FR/250 R non adjustable, short body. but Dave and I worked on the valving with progress. Dave did the driving and I did the advising on where to change the curve based on what he was feeling.
FIY, Dave is no longer with SCC and is a development engineer for Mazda now, doing this sort of stuff.

yeah, i read his column in the last issue... too bad.. i liked his sense of humor.
back to Nissans..
in comparison to AGXs how is the dampening? for example i run 2/4 on the street and feel the fronts are not good enough at rebound(jounce) dampening on the highway at 70-80mph.. too bouncy...
for autox i run 2/6-8... depending on course design.. and feel that the 3 setting is too stiff and 2 setting is a tad too soft..

how do they compare?
Dave will continue to write his technobabble column and contribute to SCC frequently as a freelancer. Notice he has displaced yours truly as the top contributing editor on the mast head?
What spring rates are you running? For running 350/250, I find AGX somewhat lacking in rebound damping. They are ok when new but quickly deteriorate to where they are not quite enough. AGX's do have a nice mildly digressive curve to them.
As a note, I really love the AGX, koni bump stop, Hypercoil and progress bar combo for daily drivers. Its almost like Nissan should have made the car this way.
Coleman loves them too. Buy em from Chris Scarpulla.

Wasn't that Scott Oldham who wrote that article? Are they both gone?
Oldham went to Edmonds.com, Dave is now a product development engineer for Mazda. Josh Jaquote will hopefuly be promoted to chief editor. He is the real deal and will keep rice from infiltrating SCC.
With the front bar to full soft, is it even needed over the already large front sway bar?
In my opinion which is different from some other experts, SE-R's need big bars to keep the suspension off the bumpstops while cornering, especialy with streetable spring rates. For instance some top SE-R Cup teams don't run a front bar at all. I uses a slightly softer spring rates and run a bar.
I think that the stock front, progress rear combo is too tail happy for most people except for autocrossers.

Mike, thanks for letting us know whats going on with SCC - wish DC luck for us - I'm sure he'll do well - hopefully the mag will get back to where it used to be.
Any word on the cost of the Progress setup?

I think a lot of the fallout and staff turnover at SCC is due Primedia's desision to pump money into Superstreet while letting SCC fend for itself. Both magazines are top revinue generators but Primedia probably sees the SS demographic as the growth market where resourses are best spent. Personaly I think the SCC reader has more disposable income to spend but I don't have first hand data to prove that, not that I have anything to do with those sorts of desisons. Sadly I see many SCC readers gravitating towards GRM. More power to GRM. SCC is kinda of in a unique place. Good prose and intelligent writing like a traditional new car book, like R&T or C&D but in the import performance market with how to's hardcore tech and cool project cars, no chicks and no lifestyle. I sorta think its the true enthusiasts magazine.
I think the progress setup fairly cheap like around $1200 bucks. Probably the best bang for the buck suspension for the weekend warrior.

I thought the same exact thing the day I installed that setup on my SE-R, Mike. It's the way the car should have been from the beginning. It's that good.

i am currently running the Hypercoil/AGX set up.. and maybe my fronts are starting to wear out..?

i love the way the car rotates now.. took me a few sessions to learn the car after my progress install.. but now drive full stiff all the time.. but i am a hardcore autocrosser..
