First autox, some questions

Hey now!

I'm planning on entering my first autox in about a week, and was wondering what settings I should use for my B13.

I have the AGX/hyperco 2 setup, with front/rear STBs, and i'm running 205/50/15 Hankook Z212s. Suspension wise, everything else is stock.

What settings should I use for the AGX's, and what tire pressures should I run?

I would go with 3/6 for the settings on the AGX's.

As for Tire pressure, run one time, and see how much roll you have. Using shoe polish on the 4 points, on the edge, of your tire will give you a good indication. But don't over inflate, as you will actually be hurting your tires then. If you are rolling too much, you may just need to slow down a bit, and run some smoother lines.

I don't think I'll be able to do more than one run, I think the format will only allow for three consecutive laps. Maybe I can go to a parking lot and try to dial in the pressure beforehand.

Uhh.. what kind of autocross is this? Does not sound like a SCCA one.

As for your set up just go 3/6, Fronts around 35-38psi and rears around 35psi. You should be fine. You are probably going to be fighting understeer the entire time since autoxing is new to you. I wouldn't worry about setup as much as knowing the course.

Sounds like you're going to the Duel at De Anza? If so, I'll see you there.

Drive it smoothly and have fun. That's your "setup."

Only one shot? That's pretty intense, even for the veterans. I might have to float that idea locally for a gimmick or charity autocross someday.

Knowing the course will take a lot of the pressure off. Be able to navigate it in your head without looking, and you'll be able to focus on driving rather than feeling out the course.

This is the infamous "Duel at De Anza" event that is held once a year at De Anza college. They have a field of 250 cars max, so that is why they only allow one run.

This is a fun event to raise money for their auto shop. I've attended as a spectator in years past and they always get some crazy vehicles out there to compete. Plus, the guy who announces is a total crackup, it is worth it to attend just to hear his commentary.

I don't plan on being competitive at all, but it is something I've always wanted to do since it is so close to home. I'm nervous about just being able to make it through the course!

250 cars and only 1 run?

Our last event in Atlanta we ran 253 cars with 4 runs a piece on a 50 second course. Started at 9:30am and were done and packed up by 6:30pm.

They need to look into some better event managing.

This event has always been run this way. It's not an SCCA-sanctioned event. The event is run by the De Anza College Auto Tech program, with help from some local car clubs.

It's more of a sideshow than an autocross event. You do get three runs, but they're all run consecutively with the first lap being a warmup lap, and your timed lap is the next two laps combined. The tech inspection is more involved than at your usual autocross or HPDE, as it is like an assignment for the auto tech students.

This event has been held at this college for more than 30 years, and every year, they always meet their cap of 250+ cars. Up until 3 years ago, it was basically first-come, first-served up until the 250th entrant. People used to line up as early as 3am just to run this event. Now, it's by invitation only, but not sure how that works, now.

Most of the local top SCCA autocrossers usually sign up for this event. Heck, I got my ass handed to me by Vic Sias in his 500hp M3 in Street Mod. I finished 3rd in class, at more than 8 seconds behind, with the 2nd place guy less than a second ahead of me.

Really? Not from what I've seen/heard. Or if they do, maybe it's so everyone can get a quick snack in?

And Jim. you know that idea would never fly at OMR.

Well, typically no. Our first event was pretty packed (for STL), I think like 160+ or so, and that was close to a record for a regional event. So that, plus a lot of newbies, plus it being the first event and so forth led to a generally not efficient event. Although I'll admit, it seems everything is run fairly lax, which is both good and bad (depending on which end of the stick you are on). Anyway, I'll look forward to seeing you this season!

Going off-topic

August is good timing. The fifth and final MiDiv divisional of the year is in St. Louis on September 3/4 (Sun/Mon Labor Day event). I intend to be there, and probably come up early to check out some sights on Saturday.

Go try a regular SCCA sponsored AutoX. Some regions run heats and some don't, but between each run you'll still have time to make adjustments to tire pressures/strut settings still.

Here's a video of my run. Comments on improving my technique greatly appreciated. I was getting some lift on the inside rear wheel on a few corners, would bigger sway bars help or make it worse?

It was a lot of fun, I think I did ok for my first time out, and I will definitely consider attending some SCCA-sponsored events in the future.

Initial impression, you're not using all of the track and your line is off. Use ALL of the space to set up your turns and accelerate. For example, at the beginning of the run when you're coming towards the camera and into the left handler, there's a good two-three feet of space on the right side of the car that you're not using. In any real racing, they use every single inch and then some.

Another point, when you're on the backside of the course, going from right to left in the video and entering a right hander followed by a left: after the right hand turn, you're exactly in the middle of the 'road' entering the left hander. What I would've done was turn in late for a late apex on the right hander which would allow you to stay on the right side of the 'road' for a proper entry into the left hander.

Best way to learn is to watch the pros! Just watch Speed Channel (when they're showing REAL racing, not NASCAR) on the weekends.

You looked like you were pushing it pretty hard...which is a good thing for a beginner. That's the place to push it hard and learn about your car's handling characteristics. I know some beginners that didn't push their cars nearly hard enough for a couple years.

Okay, constructive criticism...
- You push the car a little too hard in certain spots. Listen to your tires. They give you feedback.
- Your lines seemed off from the view we had. Just like mentioned above, learn to use all of the course. You almost appeared confused when entering a corner. You were tapping your brakes as if you didn't know what speed to enter it at.

Good luck in future AutoXs. You'll probably have a lot more fun at a regular SCCA event as you get time between runs to tweak, work the course and ride along with some other racers. Having veterans ride with you and you ride with them is a great way to learn. PM me if you have anymore AutoX Q's. This is my 7th year.

Yep, I was definitely pushing it too hard, which led to me not taking the optimal lines through the corners, as my car felt like it was sliding around way too much.

It's really hard to control that urge to go too fast, rookie mistake, eh? I probably would have had a better time if I did most of my braking before the corner and reduced the entry speed a bit.

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it.
