New ammunition for STX.....

I've done 2 night series autocorsses this year with Highlands SCC. So far, twice I've been beaten, rather soundly, by Subarus. Both times ~.7-.9 seconds.

That should end now.

Item 1: Brandy new Falken 615s. I was on an old set of 215s. They were on their 3rd season. They were not at their best.

Item 2: Alignment. I had massive toe in on the front. Big time. Almost 1 degree total. That's alot. In addition, the right rear was toed in ~.3 degrees.

This should help the plowing we had at the last event.

Amazingly, with old busted tires and a f@#ked up alignment, my co-driver and I were usually top 10 raw.

Well... I just found out my co-driver/car owner has been sitting on a set of front camber kits for the Type R all season. I have been bugging him constantly to get an alignment. I think he is finally starting to listen to me.

We have been running on 615s most of the season and keeping up/beating most of the WRXs in STX. The last SEDIV we both got our asses handed to us... but most of that was us and not the car.

We have a good set of 215s waiting for nationals, maybe (or the rest of the season) and plan on 2 new sets of 615s for nationals, one shaved and one for rains...

We toyed with the idea of going to the 225-45-15 Hankooks but decided to stick with the 615s b/c that is what the car is set for and what we have been driving on.

sticky tires are great! What cars are the main competition up there for fastest raw times? There are a TON of STIs and S2000s down here with a few Mini's. The Mini's are really the only FWD cars keeping up.

I just auto-x'd my friends 93 NA MR2 on V710s. The grip is insane! I'm pretty disappointed in my performance though... he beat me by 3 seconds (58.08x vs 61.079). Going from street tired, FWD, turbo to mid-engine, no power, rwd on slicks.... took a bit of getting use to. I could've easily shaved 1.5-2 seconds as there were two sections I messed up on pretty badly, but that last second would've been hard to come by. He gained a lot of time on me in the slalom... I was using part throttle in 3rd whereas he was going full throttle through the whole thing. He told me that as long as you're on the throttle the rear would stick in his car. He got 1st in pax and I got 11th pax out of 106, so not too bad I suppose for having never driven the car before.... but I should've gone at least that 1.5 sec faster.

Yeah, MR2s are fun but you have to drive them on the limit to be fast. Brake in a straight line and don't lift in a turn and you'll be fine.....

I got 3rd in class 2 years ago the 2nd time I drove a buddy's MR2 in ES....

Matt, if you are not doing your own alignments at this point I should slap you. .7-.9 is so doable with tires and a good alignment.

Steve, slap me. Currently, I have no garage so I have a small excuse. Besides, that whoop-ass Hunter alignment rack my new tire shop has is a really nice piece.

The STX competition at the night series I do is Subarus: 1 WRX and 1 2.5 RS. I have the 2.5 covered, even with the old tires and busted alignment.

SM STis are usually FTD. Particularly when Furhman shows up to play.

Yeah, the STIs are ususally NEAR the top for FTD here, but there's always that one oddball car that shows up. One was a M3 Roadster with a blower on top for good measure running on P-Corsa tires... oh, and the driver was either a Skip Barber or Panoz instructor but it was his first auto-x.

At this past auto-x, there's a guy that has a MR2 Spyder with a brand new 3.5L V6 Avalon motor swapped in on Hoosiers... the Avalon was wrecked on the test drive so he got the motor with like 200 miles.

My friend and I didn't have much competition in ES. He obviousy got first and I got 2nd. Only two other cars and they were 3 and 7 seconds behind ME! One of them was even another MR2 on slicks.

Well you won't have to worry about Stompy for a little while. It blew a turbo and ring lands at the DoubleXChallenge. But it will be coming back stronger with a fully SP prepped block....

I've finally broke down and decided AS is not the class for the STi. I'm going to run STU for fun here soon. My SE-R needs an alignment and fresh tires before I'll ever AutoX it again.

I've only been there once, and that was to sort out the rear diff. My car is BSP (not SM) BTW, and the name is FEHRman.

I did crack a ringland in the #1 cylinder, so I'm doing the motor. I'm probably missing Nationals for other reasons, but I'll start playing again in September or October with an interesting tire combo.

Yikes! Was that caused by detonation? Too aggressive of a tune? STI is one of the cars on my future car list...

And that once was impressive. Steve does nice diff work, huh? That car launched harder than any I've ever seen. I would estimate your 60 ft times are ~1.5 seconds.

Sorry about your engine, and the spelling of Fehrman. I had trouble with that on the phone the other day.

I imagine the words no one in DSP wants to hear is "Fehrman is getting a fresh engine...."

Im not sure if you are talkiing about the RS-2s, since they are the most comprable to the 615s I'll assume you are and say they are 225-50-15s. If that makes any difference in your decisions. A lot of WRX guys have been talking me into getting the RS-2s over the 615s.

The tune really wasn't very aggressive. The car never threw a detonation code, which means that if it had knock they were all one-knock events (the sensor is set to trigger on two-knock events so that it doesn't light up with every shift). It happened after running the car nearly constantly with two drivers on the hottest day of the year in Atlanta. IMO it was just a weak spot in the casting of an OEM piston. The 04 STis are know to have that problem (along with the regular WRX), but it's not very common on '05s. On the other hand, my car was the first 05 delivered to the dealership and it has seen many autocrosses since then...

Steve does awesome work. I need to call him about putting a diff in the Sentra, as he makes those too. I'm not sure what my 60' times would be at a real dragstrip. I was pulling low 1.7s in DC this year, and that was a slightly uphill start where I spun the 315s all the way through 1st gear.

No worries about the name. I was just giving you sh*t.
