SCCA Class with a turbo SE-R

What SCCA class will I be in?

I have a 91 SE-R with front and rear Progressive Sway Bars, Front and rear STB's, Hyperco Springs, AGX's, ES Bushings everywhere, AD22VF Brake Upgrade, T25 turbo setup. That should do. Oh, the wheels are Kosei K1 Racing with Falken Azenis 205/50/15's.

Street Mod.

Search for posts by "SERprise In WV" in this forum. He posts entertaining and informative accounts of autoxing his turbo Classic.

Nice setup btw, with a good alignment your car should handle very well.

I have a good feeling after you do some Auto-X you will be loosing those Azenis.

Don't get me wrong I love them for STS duty, but to compete with the big boys you going to need the serious sticky stuff.

Unless your region has a street tire class (that groups all classes under one class and gives them thier own index).....

I agree that some R compounds would be the best choice but I'm not ready to throw that kind of change around. I make good money but with a wife and 3 kids I can’t afford to go through multiple sets of tires per season. Besides that I could care less about beating anyone else. I race because I love to drive fast. I don’t race to win. That might sound strange to most but I'm a little different I guess.

Hello and welcome to Street Modified. Those Azenis won't cut it with a turbo car. Even 205/50/15 Kumho Victoracers have a hard time, to be honest with you.

Drive your car like it has a big V8 in it (aka get out of first gear ASAP on the course) and watch your times drop.

SM, at least in out region, is a *lot* of fun. The hot cars in my region is a 2.4L swap + Turbo Neon and a stripped down focus. We've also got one Turbo Civic Si, and extra boosted DSMs. Some people run race tires, some don't.

True, you probably won't be all that competetive on Azenis, but you'll have a blast racing against all kinds of cars, which is the true big draw of the STS/STX/SM classes to me.

Of course, I still race mostly for fun, rather than being so focused on competing that it becomes no longer fun.

My $.02.

T-dog, I have put up a matrix to show what class most mods will place you for autocross. It's on my web site. Click the profile button below my posts and you will find a link to my site.

FWIW I am getting rid of soem OEM NX wheels with victoracers in the for sale forum.

FWIW SM is a great class to run in at the local level. Typically many poeple who are into the same kinds of mods/cars that we are.

Huh

Why question someone else's intentions. I raced to win my first official season in autocross, now I go more for fun than anything else. To each his own I guess, but most people I know that ONLY do things to win, they miss the fun the rest of us are having when they don't win.

I couldn't agree more Wes. Why is it so hard to believe someone races to have fun? When you autoX who are you racing anyway? It's you against a clock. Sure I would like to be faster than the guys in my class but I'm not going to go out and spend an extra grand on my car so I can be 1 second faster on the track. I enjoy pushing the car to its limit and throwing myself through the corners. If I run faster than the other guys then great. If they are quicker than me that's fine as well. If I were road racing against other cars then I would surely like to be in front of all of them and have them chasing me but not at the expense of safety or having fun. When I drag race my car I always do the best I can and don't give a damn about the guy next to me. Unless he's driving a Civic, then it's personal, hee hee. If the fun of driving is squashed out by your competitive nature then why race?? If the only satisfaction you get from racing comes when you win then I feel sorry for you. Someone is ALWAYS going to be faster than you. That's a fact! Live life to it's fullest, drive fast, drive hard and have a damn good time at it!

Um, how about to improve your driving skills? Maybe to have some fun? Gee, I don't know.... how about because of the comraderie that the SCCA has, which a lot of other sanctioning bodies do not? (Remember, we're talking about autocross only here, in this post)

The paycheck for first place at an SCCA autocross is the same amount as the paycheck for last place: $0

You're missing out on sooooo much with that win-at-all-costs attitude. IMHO.

Hey, don't forget those oh so fashionable dash plaques! You know, the ones that keep stacking up in the trailer?

Seriously, if you're only showing up to compete in an amateur event to win at all costs, you'll probably just end up pissed off yourself and pissing off the people you run with.

Actually the trophies that we get each event for 1st is a beer mug with our region's logo. The other trophy positions (top 1/3 of that class) get whiskey glasses.

The other regions I've been to have a nice wooden plaque and then an other had a nice wooden plaque for those "oh so fashionable dash plaques".

Personally I go to the Auto-X to win.

Why? Because I have beaten ever driver in my class before, if I can do it once I can do it again. I can accept losing to them by a 10th of a sec , but if I lose by 1/2 sec or more I know I'm having an off day.

There is a good friend of mine in DS (Spec-V with R comps) that I race raw time against too. Usually we are within 10th or 100ths of each other.

Like I said I'm o.k. with losing but you have to have some standards for yourself. Not winning is fine but have a buddy out there to set goals by. I know once I'm in SM I probably won't win. But on a week to week basis I should be within .xxx secs of so and so.

SCCA is a restrictive, expensive bitch!

NASA has a SE-R class with 2 divisions and half the restrictions.. Better for a beginer w/ the kid clamp on his wallet!
