Hi all,
Quick question. I just want to auto-x my daily driven '92 classic for kicks. The car is bone stock, but i have the ES hyperflex kit, Hyperco gen2's and AGX's waiting in my garage. I live in SoCal btw
1. What class would i be in with my car the way it is? I don't really care about being competitive or anything, i just wanna get out there and have a good time.
2. What class would i move to once i put on the above mentioned items?
3. Most importantly...is it even a good idea to drive this car to and from the track? I don't imagine anything happening to it especially since it's stock and all. Suggestions?
I read the Solo2 website and didn't really find the info i was looking for. Thanks for the time everyone.

Is there a site where i can look up the rules for each class? I have a feeling the SCCA doesn't post detailed rules about any class so that you would have to buy the rulebook from them. Correct?
In saying that, what are the guidelines for GS? bone stock and a certain engine size?
Also, what are the rules for STS and DSP? and what makes one class more fun to drive than another?
I know i seem really green when it comes to all this and i really appreciate the help. I've been a SCCA member for about a year now doing flagging duties for the road races...FLAGGING AT THE LONG BEACH IS AWESOME!!! If anyone is interested in doing it in '04 let me know! (shameless plug Anyway, i realized i couldn't afford to go roadracing (yet) so i'm switching my attentions to something a little more reasonable.
I'd post the information for you....but its spread out over dozens of pages in the National Solo rules. And its in PDF form, so I can't copy and paste the text. Anyhow you should pick up copies of both the Solo rule book and the SCCA General Competition Rules & Specifications. Both books will run you $25-30 bucks and come with CD ROMs. You need to have these books and won't regret the purchase if you intend to participate in SCCA events. Buy them through the SCCA website.
Best bet is to go to an event and get a rulebook. There are some online sources but they are way out of date.
I can give you the general rules though.. Stock classes like GS have few allowable modifications. Cars are classed in AS-HS (A Stock through H Stock) according to their performance potential, not necessarily engine size or whatever. In the rulebook all the stock classes are listed with the cars that are eligible for them.
The main modifications allowed in Stock classes are:
- Front swaybar and endlinks may be replaced
- Shocks/struts may be replaced with same sized replacements, ie no shortened struts.
- Tires are relatively open, any DOT tire that fits on the stock sized wheel is legal. This means Hoosiers and sticky Kumhos are allowed.
- Exhaust from the catalytic converter back may be replaced. Some people simply unbolt the exhaust from the cat when they run.
That's the bulk of stock class modifications.
STS and DSP however, allow for much more to be done, with the primary difference between the two is that STS (Street Touring - Street [Tires]) requires "street" tires which means they must have a treadwear rating of 140 or higher. General rule of thumb in STS is to run Falken Azenis tires. DSP (D Street Prepared) allows the same tire options as the stock classes. Other than that both classes allow bushings, coilovers, mild engine mods, camber plates, strut mounts, race seats, short shifters, etc, etc. These classes stop short of a full race car though as you can't gut the interior or go too crazy on the motor. In STS for instance you need to retain your emissions equipment.
Hope that gets you started. I would recommend putting your AGX's in with stock springs and running an event or two in GS and then start putting the rest of your parts on one at a time so have a chance to observe the changes each part makes to your car.
If you haven't done any sort of motorsports activities in your SE-R, you'll find out quick that the stock engine mounts are crap. Look into polyurethane inserts or replacement motor mounts (ES, Place Racing, Prothane, etc.).
The nice thing about STS is that the SCCA finally made it legal to replace the stock mounts.
From the Feb. '04 FasTrack: Street Touring Passed/Effective 1/1/2004 [...] Engine mounts may be replaced, but must attach in the factory location(s) without additional modification or changes. Engine position may not be changed. The amount of metal in a replacement mount may not be increased relative to the amount of metal found in a stock mount for the particular application. [...blah, blah, blah]
Add motor mounts to what you have, and you'll have a nice daily that will be fun to run locally in STS. You have a similar setup to what I'm about the install.
Thanks for the replies everyone. That really helped clear things up for me. I want to try and make it out to the opener at CA speedway later this month. Not sure if i'm going to make it or not because i might be moving that weekend so we'll see.
If i do make it out i don't think i'm going to compete, probably just gather some information. Another question: are the people there pretty accesible? I want to pick some brains while i'm out there. Last question (for now anyway): what kind of safety requirements would i need? i know the SA2000 helmet, but what about driving suit? gloves, shoes, etc? (this is my road racing mentality, don't think it applies to auto-x) And what about the car? can i use the stock seat belts? Do i need a cage?
If any of you guys are going to be out at the speedway for this event, drop me a line at rotaryracer2184@hotmail.com I'd like to tag along
For safety all you need is an SA2000 helmet, (they do have loaners, but YUK!) and closed Toe Shoes. Stock seatbelts are fine, most Serious Folks use a harness not for safety but seating stability.
Unless there turns out to be an event in San Diego, I will be at the event at Cal Speedway. I'm not sure what I will be racing then, but my street car is a white 92 SE-R with Black wheels.

Matt you forgot to mention to come over to the SCNAX (Stands for Sport Compact National AutoX Club) EZ-Ups. Introduce yourself and you will probably get all the help you want. Plus if its real hot or rainning you have protection under the EZ-Ups. I will be there with my Black 92 Classic. Just ask for Art and most people there will be able to point me out. I will be there at the crack of dawn and hope to be in the practice the day before. I would be glad to show you the ropes.
Thanks for the replies everyone. So is the helmet issue a SA or M helmet? I sure hope it's M so i don't have to buy another helmet...again...
Hey Art, I might take you up on that offer. Only thing is that i don't think i can make it on saturday. Does the offer still stand for sunday or do things get too hectic on sundays?

Naw Sundays are easy, both Matt and I will be there, if you made it on Saturday for a little while during my runs I could give you a ride.
