NOOB wanting help

Hey, I have NO knowledge whatsoever on autox, rally, road racing etc. I was wondering if any of you could IM me on AIM and chat with me about this stuff. I was on drifting.com where someone posted hella race videos. And I kept hearing roadracing, roadracing, roadracing. Ive almost completely lost any attraction to just driving straight. I watch these video's all day. I think I've found a new love. I'll be reading more on here now, but just want someone to help fill me in so I know what Im looking at! Thanks everyone...

vroom

PS...good website links would help too. I don't know what to search for . And when's the next meet/race/whatever in Cali??

I think the autocross situation in Sac is a little sketchy right now because they lost their good sites. You can drive to the Bay Area or Atwater for SCCA and NASA autox event though. If you want to autox in the bay area you'll need an SCCA membership too.

If you want to run your car on a track instead of autocross then check out groups that run at Thunderhill or Sears Point. I know NASA runs a "Street School" at Thunderhill which is especially for people who just want to go hotlapping and learn to drive fast correctly.

I don't know much about drifting, and roadracing is way out of my budget right now. But you will meet lots of car nuts at an autox or track day who will tell you more.

Do some NASA HPDE events. You get a whole weekend to drive on track and learn. Your instuctor will help teach you the proper methods and techniques for driving a car.
I personally don't like auto-x, but try one AFTER you have done a road racing event, it may be your cup of tea.
Rallycross is somewhat like auto-x, but better IMO. You drive a timed lap through a course. It's fun, teaches you different driving techniques. The Classic SE-R is quite competitive in its class (depending how your region classifies it). This is by far the cheapest form of motorsport. You need a mechanically sound car and a helmet, period. Pay the entry fee and have a blast.
Drifting is comparable to WWF. I can think of better ways to waste money and time. Ricer-mallrat-MTV-culture.
Mind you, this is my jaded opinion. But you asked.

Check out www.nasaproracing.com. They are a good place to get started running around a track. There are several other groups in Cali (trackracers, etc.).

I run SCCA for road racing. It is a bit expensive to get started in (car + schools + safety gear + physical, etc). NASA is much easier.

Just look for driving schools and lapping events. It should be about $300 for a weekend and in NASA that's several hours of track time. For HPDE events, you don't normally need more than an approved helmet.

Once you go to a few lapping/school events, you can decide whether to step up to full competition. For that, you'll need to choose an organization and class to run in. Everything has rules to follow that limit you on preparation, etc.

To go roadcing where you can pass anywhere on the track, you'll need a competition license, a car with a cage and other safety equip (see rules), a nomex suit, SA2000 helmet, etc. It's a blast.
