My autox setup...

I'm trying to decide what to do. For this season my setup will be simple and near stock most likely. I will be running with a WAI and hyperflex bushings, putting me in STS. I can't decide if I should use the stock 14" wheels or if I should use some 15" steelies I have on my spec right now (winter tires). I don't really know if one would weigh more than the other. I will run Azenis if I can get ahold of some.

Any suggestions on the wheels?

SpecV wheel won't fit a B13. If you're gonna run STS I'd go with 15's for sure. There are plenty of affordable light weight wheels available.

it's not a spec v wheel, it's a universal steelie.

And "affordable" is a relative term. Right now, I can't really "afford" anything, so free is affordable. Is fifteen as big as you guys go or sixteen?

when you go bigger than 15" you start to get suspension clearance issues. More so with 17" but also with 16"s

Depends on the suspension and on the rims. I ran 17" 35 mm offset wheels on my NX with no suspension rub at all. On a Classic, I've heard that a bigger issue with 16" or 17" rims/tires is fender rub.

Having said that, I agree that a light 15" rim with Azenis or Kuhmo MX's are the way to go in STS.

sounds good, but i'll probably have a heavy 15" rim for a little while.

edit: Looks like they weigh 23 lbs... yikes!

Decent 15" wheels and Azenis will run you $700+.

For roughly $220 and mounting, you could get 195/60-14 Azenis for your stock Classic rims. If you're just out to have fun, this is a cheaper way in.

i second this. i would run the 14s with the 195 Azenis. better off then the 15" universal steelies..

i ran this set up for a year and a half and will probably run half this season with the 14s/Azenis until i can get another set of 15" wheels to mount the Azenis for autox.

my thinking was, if I use the steelies temporarily, then i don't have to buy new tires if I get some lightweight 15's...

I would recommend using your steel wheels with Azenis'. If you put Azenis' on your 14's you'll be daily driving them and they'll wear out way quicker.

Don't stress on the weight of the steel wheels, you're setup isn't competitive anyway and for awhile you'll just be learning to drive the car.

Hey Kyle, Steve Linn here from Indy Region.
I would also say go with the 15's. The difference in the amount of rubber you are putting to the ground is big. If you are interested, I may have a worn out set of 205/50/15 Azenis available. I had promised them to someone else, but I have not heard back in quite awhile. They have some visiable tread, but not much and they have been heat cycled to death. But, it may be worth your while if you can get them mounted cheaply. Great tire to just beat the heck out of till it's dead.
