New suspension

Short version:
Steve Foltz made me some shortened struts. Sentra housing with a standard B13 insert. I am stunned at how much better they are than AGXs. AGXs are good, but even with GC plates there's not enough travel for serious autox/track work. Now I have enough. I also like the rebound adjustable only design of the Konis. Feels better than compression and rebound in one adjustment. The AGXs just never felt like the front end would take a set and stay there. Required lots of minor mid-corner corrections. Konis: perfect. I'm sold.

Tried it out this weekend at an autocross and despite the car being better than ever, the competition was better than ever as well. I finished 4th in class despite an 8th place finish in pax.

So it's a sentra housing with a B13 Koni insert? Why not just run a B13 AGX??? What is your setup in the rear?

The struts I made for him are under 12 inches long. That is over 1 inch shorther then the standard B13 strut. He also wanted a custom spring setup. Lowered perch and long 10 inch spring. That way he could run close to 1.5 inch drop and still get mega travel.

My suspension:

Front: Koni B13 inserts by Steve with welded perch for coilovers. Springs are 10", 325 lb/in Hypercoils. Ground Control camber/caster plates. Stock front sway bar.

Rear: AXGs with 7", 250 lb/in Eibach ERS, Addco 17mm rear sway.

Energy suspension urethane everywhere.

My theory: I basically NEVER adjust the front struts, but I always adjust the rear. The front is where the suspension travel is most critical on a B13, so I gave up the external adjustability of the AGXs up front for increased suspension travel. I think it's well worth it.

I just realized that damn near every major suspension component manufacturer is represented in my car: Ground control, Hypercoil, KYB, Koni, Addco, Energy suspension. Talk about a bastardized suspension. I'm surprised it works...

Just got back from Summit Point. Wow! That's the best the car has ever handled anywhere. I'm now a huge fan of short struts. Kinda upset it took me so long. 2 huge thumbs up!!!

It's that long spring coupled with the extra travel. Nice combo. When we meet up in August at VIR I want to try my Kosie's with 205/50/15's to see how they fit, if thats ok.

Steve, how do your shortened struts compare with the Moti's length wise? It sounds like they're the same Koni inserts as the Moti's... I've long been considering the Moti's but have been unable to touch them at $235 USD per corner - which works out to too many Canadian dollars one their over the border. My car's off the road for the winter (motor swap - fingers crossed!) so I could send you my strut bodies if you're interested in making this a bit of a business for yourself (car is a 1600NX).

Of *COURSE* we'll need to take them out on track for a session to make sure they don't rub under load, right ?

I purcahsed all the parts and shipped to Steve. After paying him a little something for his time, I came out of the deal for a little over $500. Remember these are the ones with welded perches for coilovers. Price also includes new springs and an alignment.

My Konis came in last week, pretty anxious to get them in and test them out, but I still have some more parts coming.

They will be replacing a set of AGXs on 300/200 hypero springs, and I'm not sure yet whether or not I want to try to find someone in my area to weld the shortened strut in, or leave them as bolt in inserts with less suspension travel. What would suck would be to get them welded in, and have one go out within the warranty period, and not be able to get in replaced for free.

Hey Madd Matt - thanks for the input - $500 would be awesome - Steve, comments? I've got Hyperco springs, and would send you all of the stock NX bodies for re-sizing and Koni inserts - no coilover spring perches needed or anything. This wouldn't be until Dec. or Jan. once the motor gets pulled, etc. Your input would be very appreciated - drop me a PM if you want to take this off line.

This is bizarre. You would think the Koni up front and AGX in back would feel strange. I'm thinking about it...
