sunroof fillers

i am prototyping some sunroof filler panels for the b13. i should have one back for test fitting in 2 weeks.

these would fit inside the sunroof opening and rivet/screw/bolt into the flange along the front and sides with some kind if clips along the back.

they are 1/8" black abs plastic with a pebble texture.

installation would be completely reversable with the exception of a few holes in the flange

depending on how much silicone you use they could be weather tight

i'm looking at a $65-$75 price point

stay tuned..........

I was thinking this was going to be something we could use to permanently eliminate our sun roofs with, and stiffen the chassis a bit, also. While a driving helmet will fit better under the headliner without the control "bumps" and the height you lose from having a sun roof, I'd really like something that would add to the stiffness of the chassis. I don't think abs plastic will do that. I'm guessing this will save a bit of weight, though.

Still, sounds interesting.

Peace,
Mark

Mark, I've been considering this same thing for some time now. To take full advantage of this though, you would need to find a headliner from a non-sunroof sentra to use with this filler piece and gain back needed head space for us taller drivers .

Chuck, would your filler piece work with a head liner from a non-sunroof sentra?

vlad - the sunroof area is not somewhere you could easily find any chassis re-enforcement. the surounding sheetmetal is 20g? not enough to provide a solid mounting point for ... anything substantial.

mc - i don't know if it would work with a non-sunroof headliner. you're going to need to leave at least some of the flange to rivet/screw/bolt the filler to. i guess it depends on how much room there is between the headliner and the underside of the roof.

this product is aimed at racers and autocrossers that want to save weight. in the case of racers glass removal is a requirement. i hate seeing big pieces of sheetmetal riveted over the sunroof opening. it looks so tacky

Ahhh, I was thinking along the lines of complete removal of the sunroof and all associated rails and motor . Everything as seen below pretty much. I am really wanting the headroom space, since I mostly do open track days and HPDE's...

From the B14 FSM, this is what I would like to remove and just put a cap/filler in place of the sunroof that is epoxied or rivoted in permently

Chuck, thanks for the info on the sheet gauge... don't know what I was thinking. McCoy is after the same exact thing I am... more headroom for helmet space.

I'll be getting my car painted this spring, it's my brother's bday present to me. I'd really like to get something in there permanently that could blend in with the roof and look good painted.

I don't think finding a headliner would be that difficult... of course I'm assuming that just about any B13 headliner would fit, not just the ones for the sr20.

Peace,
Mark

32 3/4" by 17 1/4" Do you need the radius of the corners as well? If so, i'm not exactly sure how to measure that, so if you could tell me how that would be great.

Take a piece of cardboard, hold it up there, and trace it with the sunroof open. Retrace onto a sheet of paper, put it into an envelope and mail it to him. Of course, it may just be easier to find a local B14 and take the measurements from that.

I'm going to see the body/paint guy this weekend. I'm going to ask him about welding a piece of sheet metal into that space and ask him how it would look and how well the paint will match. Course, if it's too expensive... no go.

On the other hand, why couldn't I just take the head liner and controls before I head to the track? Duh!

Peace,
Mark

i'll be interested...but hopefully someone comes out with a metal one someday. i'd like to have a metal replacement that i can weld up and then have the appearance of never having a sunroof at all from teh outside. i'd be doing this just to save weight but it's still my daily driver so i'm awaiting pics..keep us posted whenever u get pics and settled price.

i got a sample today ................. they still need a little work

they have a gap around the opening of about 1/8" (i guess the plastic shrank more than i thought it would)

i'm going to see if they can rework the mold for the proper fit

i think i'm also going to put in some stiffening ribs to keep it from flexing

in the last pic it looks like the panel is kinda concave and the ends are bent up a little because the clamps are causing the panel to stretch

i've gotta have a weather tight fit. with the use of silicone or some weather stripping.
