I'm going to write a small series of tutorials describing some of the basic stuff involved with rom tuning. This is the first installment in the series, covering how to use the Moates Burn1, my favorite rom burner. I'm limiting this to cover just the Burn1 because I feel that it is the best low-cost rom burner on the market for a user that is only planning on working with the 27SF512 roms (or now obselete 29C256). If your going to work with other chips, there are better burners out there, but for someone who is only intrested in burning the chips on my daughterboard this burner is the stuff. This is what I use on a daily basis, just becuase its so quick and easy, even though I own a much more expensive professional tool. Anywho, feel free to chime in with thoughts or suggestions.
Ok, first off you need to buy a Moates.net Burn1. They are available for $85 here:

Assuming you've just got your burner, you need to download the drivers for it and install it. Moates has a nice write-up on installing drivers, so I'm not going to cover that. Here's their install instructions:

Now on to the fun... First you need to open your ecu and remove the roms. You do not need to remove the ecu from the car to do this. If I'm swapping roms on a B13 on a regular basis what I do is just attach the ecu to the harness (ditch the metal braket) and leave the top off. That way I can easily reach back and pull the roms, no sweat. If your driving a 240 this is even easier. When you pull the roms, note that the notch on the chip points up towards the handle of the ZIF socket! You must install them the same way. To remove the roms just lift the little handle and slide them out, piece of cake. Try not to touch the legs, static kills! Here's a picture of what the roms look like installed:
Ok, now install the first rom in the Burn1. Again, the notch points up towards the handle, but the rom goes in the very bottom position in the socket! Here's a pic:
Now plug in the burn1 and fire up the moates flash n burn program. Your going to burn the same bin file to each rom. Here's the basic procedure, follow these steps exactly:
1 - Software should detect the burn1. It will say 'found ...' in the little text box.
2 - Make sure your starting address and rom chip is correct! For B13/S13s, this should be 8000 and using the 27SF512 (or 0000 if your using the old 29C256). For B14/S14s, this should be 0000 and 27SF512. You only have to set these parameters once, the software will remember them.
3 - Now load your bin...
4 - Erase the rom (27SF512s must be erased before burning a new bin to them!)...
5 - Program the rom... This will take 3-4 seconds for a B13, and about twice that for a B14.
6 - And finally verify the rom. This goes fast, and you should see 'SUCCESS'! If the rom ever fails to verify, make sure you installed it correctly. If it is installed correctly, discard the rom. Static electricity kills! With careful use, this will never happen. Don't worry, they're tough.
Repeat steps 4-6 for the second chip and your done! Just install the roms (don't forget to push the little lever down) and thats it. Its really very easy and dosn't take very long at all to do.
