So 27SF512s are out of production

So says my distributor anyway. This is a real bummer guys, these dudes are a great little chips. Easy to work with, low cost, and the Moates Burn1/2 supports them quite nicely.

I've got about 1000 pieces currently in stock, which is good for about 500 more basic boards. I can replace with the older 27C512, but these are a pain to use (UV erasable ick!, Moates Burn1 won't burn them) and they're more expensive (go figure).

I think what I'm going to is continue to ship new basic orders with the 27SF512 until what I've got is gone, but any requests for extra chips will be the 27C512s. I'm going to assume that if your requesting chips you don't need the re-usability of the 27SF512.

I will not sell any of the 27SF512s I've got in stock separately anymore, don't even ask, I'm reserving these for new basic board orders only. I also won't adjust the price of the basic boards, but when I run out of 27SF512s I'll switch to using the 27C512 for everything (assuming of course SST doesn't decide out of the kindness of their heart to do another run of them, but I wouldn't hold your breath).

I have to imagine there's a crapload of these hanging out in desks somewhere. Are all these requests you're getting exchange, or outright? How about implementing an exchange-only policy?

I'll check in the trailer toolbox to see if we may have some to send to you. I ask that everyone else do the same... - GA

It's not the end of the world, just a pain in the butt. When you're a little fish and you get involved in the business of making something you get used to suppliers suddenly yanking production of pieces you use. It stinks but that's just the life of a little fish.

Long term what I'll do is re-design the basic board to use one of the 32-pin replacements, and offer that to guys that want to do their fiddling with chip burners. The downside to this is mainly that there is no lo-profile ZIF socket in a 32-pin package, so it will have to use the more expensive full ZIF sockets. That makes the packaging a little more challenging too, but that's my problem. Also the chips are slightly more expensive, but that's negligible. The upside is I guess I'll finally add multi-ROM switching to it. Since it's going to use a larger memory chip anyway, and it's going to be just for a small target audience that wants to fiddle with the ECU via traditional chips, it might as well support that feature.

For shops the cheaper current 28-pin basic will still be attractive- having to use a one-time burn 27C512 isn't a big deal when your just selling off-the-shelf programs.

With 1000 in stock I really don't plan on doing anything in the near term though- that's enough to carry production for quite a while.

I think there's plenty in the distribution chain for small orders to be filled for the next couple of years. The price is already creeping up, but that's expected. Pretty much the same thing happened to the 29C256.
