I know it is commonly recommended to put in 92 octane and dial in 17-19 degrees of timing, but with our sunoco 94, how much do you think is safe? Think we could go 20, 21 degrees safely? maybe this will give us a slight edge over the yanks

I keep my timing at 21 degrees and I only use 92 octane. I've run as low as 91 octane and I've never had any detonation or any problems at all. Of course this is on my car, so if you try it and blow your car up you can't blame me
I've done some "midnight test and tune" runs with my buddy's NX. Experimenting with timing with both cars to compare, we found that 21 degrees vs 18 degrees was good for about 2 carlengths at the end of the 1/4 mile. (We both ran 18 degrees and were dead even, then we bumped my timing up to 21 and I pulled 2 carlengths, I dialed mine back to 18 and he bumped it to 21 and he pulled on me by about 2 carlengths.) Of course we never got any real dyno numbers..but whatever. My car runs great!

Probably not. It's good gas.
Sunoco and Petro-Can are the two cleanest gasolines in Canada. If I can't find Sunoco, I use P-Can.
Shell and Esso are the dirtiest. I never use them at all anymore.
GRM did an article a while back about dicking with timing.
Like many things - more is not always better - and the limiting factor is not necessarily pre-detonation.
They tested their results on a dyno in order to find the optimum amount of advance - when they went over that level, peak HP fell off and both the HP and Torque curves became jittery - all w/o any pre-detonation.
I think that it's a matter of optimizing rather than maximizing - often 2 or 3 relatively useless peak hp can come at the expense of mid-range.
This is probably a stupid question to ask but I'm gonna ask it anywayz, how do you check what the timing is set at? And how do advance the ignition timing?
