I thought you guys might be interested in seeing this picture. The shocks were about 2.5 years old and used with a 375/300 GC setup. For the last 2 years, they only saw daily driving duties. I noticed that the car had started bottoming out in the rear recently. This is what I saw when I took off the wheel!
OW. Must be those Virginia roads - I took my hyperco/agx'd' B13 up there recently to play with my kid in Richmond; I've been down here (Atlanta) for six years, but I will NEVER complain about the condition of city roads down here again. Richmond must not have filled a pothole since I left. So much for tax cuts: no $ for infrastructure.

If you don't have the patience
to do it right the first time,
how is it you have the time to
do it over and over again?
Perhaps the rear bushings are shot and it's causing the strut to move around enough to snap the shaft? Or maybe you're torqueing the top shaft nut a little too tight? Perhaps it's a little of both? Just throwing out ideas....

I don't think so. I replaced the suspension with a new hyperco/agx setup. The mounts were in good condition. The top shaft nut does not apply load to that part of the shaft.

I filled out the contact form on the KYB website and asked if they wanted to inspect the failed components. I never heard back from them. Coilovers void the KYB warranty so I just ordered new ones (my 3rd set). KYB did replace my first set under warranty. However, Stranos never reimbursed me for my replacement costs (AVOID STRANOS!). Looking at the failure surfaces, it appears that it was a fatigue failure which initiated at a defect at the groove. The crack slowly grew about 1/3 of the way across the shaft until the shaft fractured completely. I may get a friend to put it on the SEM to take a closer look.

Seriously, the roads/streets in Richmond proper are as bad (or worse) than those in Minneapols/St. Paul. Apparently, none of the road crews around here know what a pavement transition is.
