My CSK's with some pics (B13)

I'm slowing getting my setup finished. See this thread (amongst others) for info: Koni Discussion After reading Steve's info, Wes' picture heavy response, etc; here is where I stand.

This setup will use Maxima front housing (w/ Maxima Red inserts) and B13 front housings (w/ B14 Front Red inserts). Here are the housings after using Taiden's example, and removing the stock spring mount (before and after grinding the tabs down):

Max Front

Rear

After I had the outside smooth, I bead-blasted the housings and had another forum member weld collars to hold the threaded sleeve. After that was complete, another buddy (a diff't forum member) powder-coated the housings for me in wrinkle black (bad pic):

The threaded sleeve doesn't fit over the top of the Maxima insert, but I used a bench grinder to turn that top down just a small amount. This allowed me to deal with the insert and housing apart from the sleeve.

To get the inserts into the housings, I had to sand some paint off of the inserts a little as it was a very tight fit. I also used JB Weld at the bottom, and the top of the inserts for safety.

I followed Steve's directions and used a 5mm headset spacer for the front inserts after cutting the bolt and "nub" on the bottom of the insert. The front insert is on the bottom, and the bolt can be seen. The rear setup did not require a spacer as the "nub" fit tight to the very bottom of the housing to reach the required measurements.

Here are the assemblies together for a test fit. The threaded sleeve fits around 3/4" below the top of the Koni insert for all 4. Maxima insert with Cusco camber plate on top, and B14 insert with pillow ball mount on the bottom:

I will be running 380 ft/lb front springs and 350 ft/lb rear springs for right now.

I need to order some bumpstops and some new thrust bearings for the front, and then the setup should be ready to install. Bumpstops will probably be Energy Suspension or OEM as the springs should coil bind before the strut bottoms out - in theory the bumpstops should never get used (if I understand the theory correctly) .

The front setup is 1.5" lower than stock - meaning I can lower the car 1.5" without losing any suspension travel, and the rear is 1" lower than stock....well, assembled measurements are within 1/8" of design (not bad).

Here are some stock measurements for reference (link to big version Click):

If anyone wants to recreate this setup, I can give you some better sheets with more measurements. This setup (per Steve) is better if you plan to run 400 ft/lb springs or more - I may upgrade to 400 fronts in the future, so that is why I gave up the external adjustment of the Spec V inserts.

Thoughts?

Josh

Looks great. My preference to keep the sleeve from moving though is to use the supplied O-Rings that come with the Ground Control kits instead of the duct tape. The duct tape when it heats up will just to into sticky nasty adhesive.

I bought my GC's used, so I didn't get the O-Rings. I need to order a new sleeve from GC though, so I'll see about adding some of those to my order. I left a gap between the duct taped areas, so I might be able to use the O-Rings in that location in conjunction with the tape.

This was definitely a budget build. Everything was purchased used from the forum except the Koni's and stainless bolts. Who says SR owners aren't cheap?

Good luck with getting GC to sell you a new sleeve. Their stand point is that they will not sell parts, only complete kits with the exception of springs and camber plates.

You can go to the hardware store and get o-rings that will work as well though, no need to purchase it from them.

I've been using duct tape on mine for years, never an issue or a noise.

Cool. I see you didn't waste any time putting the Maxima/B14 combo to work.

I did feel a tiny pang of regret, but it went away after I found a pair of front B15 yellows on sale last month.

i dont use duct tape, but i use thick electrical tape and have also been using this method since my first GC install in 99. no problems what so ever. sometimes, i even use the supplied o-rings and tape around them instead of wasting a ton of tape.

good lookin setup btw

I have also used the duct tape silicone method on btoh of my setups using GC and Koni's sleeves and it works great. As long as you get the tape right and use a god silicone and let it cure, it will last a long time!

Suspension looks awesome by the way!

They used to sell parts now they don't. You can get everything they sell from Koni, or a real race shop online. Coleman racing is another good option.

That front looks perfect. Any issue with tire rub in the rear with the collar so low?

I don't know yet. I haven't tested them on the car yet. I need some new "strut bearings" for the front, and one of the used threaded sleeves I bought is worn. I hope to get it ready, and installed by the end of the month.

The collar issue was one of the reasons we went so low profile for the sleeve mount - that was Speed Raycer's idea (owner of Izzy's Custom Cages)

Thanks for the words guys.

In my experience if the sleeve is next to the tire in the back of a B13 it will rub. If it's above the tire you are fine.

It's negated if you use offset top hats, but it's definately prefered that you do that as a bonus rather than out of necessity.
