I've searched on this forum, through the fsm and the haynes in order to find a step by step process. I've gathered bits and pieces and figured that was enough... obviously, it's not.
I can't get the friggin bottom strut bolt(passenger side) off, head and nut are stripped. So , since I got the strut bolts off the drivers side, I figured I'd start there. Even following the info from different threads here and the fsm and the haynes... I can't get the friggin axel out.
I've never seen this done before or even done it on another car. I just know that some of y'all who have done this have a bunch of little tricks up your sleeve and can point to some obvious things that I'm missing.
Anyway one of you grassroots mechanics can do a comprehensive, non-assuming write up from the start to finish? I can't be the only one who would appreciate this.
Peas us Riced,
Mark

I'm assuming you can't get he drivers side axle out of the transmission? Use a pry bar, have someone rotate it while you are prying and it will pop right out.
The pry par works great to get it out a few inches, but once it gets stuck on the clip, there's no good spot to use it on. So once it's out a bit, wrap a chain around it, and give it a tug. I read this on the forum a while ago, and it works like a charm.

Pry bar will still work, that's what i always use. Chain is an interesting idea.
You'll have to show me where you put the bar, because I can never get it to work. The damn driver side axle has pwned me so many times, that I leave the damn thing in now when I do a tranny or engine swap. But let me tell you, the chain thing works! I am driver side axle challenged no more.

Oh yes, i always leave it in. Better to not deal with it altogether
Oh, and while we're here.... the other common problem is there's not enough room to get the axle out of the hub. If that's the case, just disconnect the sway bar from the lower control arm, which will allow the lca to drop a few more inches.
I used a rope tied around the inner CV and tugged like hell on it. Make sure you get the rope as close to the tranny as possible so you're not separating the CV. When you lever it, you put constant pressure on it and the clip jams, you need a sudden sharp shock to get it out

Get a rope and tie it around the half shaft spline going into the tranny.
put a folded tarp under the axle step back about 10 feet from the car
put all your weight on it very quickly
your axle is now on your garage floor

Sounds more like the problem is the hub/strut interface. As in the two strut bots and one has both heads messed up. You can cut it out, grind it off, try a impact of a smaller size and hammer it on. If it's spinning I would cut it off.
I actually found some of the above notated threads last night... don't know why I missed them before. Going to drain the tranny tonight, it's time anyway. Then, I'm going to hammer a different socket onto the bolt and try that... I'd better order some new ones for the install.
I'll work on both axels tonight... the rest of the week, I'm working double shifts. Got my email notification that the new axels shipped today. I ordered beefier units, actually Raxels recommended them. Other than the cv joint, I didn't think to ask what else qualifies them as beefier.
Crap, got to order the oil seals tomorrow morning.
Thanks for the input, I'll let y'all know how I fare.
Wow, that wasn't that bad. Took Steves advice and pounded an extra socket onto the nut and torqued it right off. Once I had the 3 bolts undone, and twisted the hub out of the way, the axel popped right out.
That's all I had time for tonight. I know the driver's side won't be nearly as easy, but it's a good start. Maybe I'll have the energy to do the driver's side tomorrow... not.

P.S. I noticed a couple of bushings that were pretty worn. Was thinking of replacing them, but I think that can wait for another project.
If you are working on the drivers side, turn the steering wheel all the way to that side.....opposite for pass side, duh

i've never had a problem with just using a pry bar to pop out the drivers side either. i use a huge flat head screw driver or a tire pry bar for removing tires, the angle on the tip is perfect. the problem i always have is installing the drivers side, huge PITA!!!! sometimes it pops right in, other times upwards of a half hour to get that mf'er in.
also a nice tip for getting the axle out of the hub, always screw the nut back onto the end before hitting!! but i use a block of wood and a bfh to hit it with so not to booger the threads or anything.
oh so you know, the passenger side is cake compared to the drivers side, you will soon find this out good luck
if you have time to make digital art, post it here
if you have some graphix , fonts, ideas, that you don't have time to illustrate, post it here
and beeee veeeeerrrry
It's possible to do that? Crap! How do you make sure not to seat them too deep? I picked up the seals at one of the local nissan places yesterday... had them in stock, fer krist's sake! Ordered new strut/spindle bolts, too.
I've got to find some mt-90 locally, too. Mine was 2 years old, so I went ahead and drained it. I've got some Motul left, 2 1/2 or 3 quarts... I may use this if I can't find the redline, and mix it with something else to fill the case.
