I bought a set of Falken Ziex 912's in the Discount Tire fire sale, so I figured I would register my first impressions.
They are 205/50-15's mounted on 15x7" +35mm offset wheels. They replaced a set of Falken Ziex 512's, which I know has been one of the standard street meats around here. Heh, meats.
First of all, the 912 looks butch. The 512 in the same size looked somewhat puny and stretched on a 7-inch wide wheel. Falken's site shows the 912's tread width is slightly wider, but the major story with the 912 is the massive sidewall thickness. Serious sidewall protection. Because of this, they are physically wider than the 205/50-15 Azenis 615's and Toyo RA-1's I have on identical sets of wheels. If you can't fit Azenis on the back of your B13 without rubbing, these won't fit any better.
Still have some room.
Also, the tread pattern is asymetrical, which means they can be rotated to any corner without dismounting. Bonus.
My very short road time seems to tell me they have similar characteristics to the Ziex 512. They are an all-season tire, but they grip enough before squalling to keep from killing your fun.
I went for a more spirited drive tonight, and this is a surprisingly competent tire. At full tread and no more than 15 minutes of break-in time, they maintained a limit as far as I'm comfortable pushing on public roads. They sing just a little as they approach the limit, then squall predictably when you get there. No surprises.
They may fall on their face if asked to do lapdays and autocrossing, but for twisty backroads they have more than enough lateral grip to keep it fun. Considering the price, 360 treadwear rating, and all-season capability, I am extremely pleased so far.
Unless the G20 breaks, the SE-R is never seeing snow again, but these are apparently M+S rated, too. The 912 seems like a great all around compromise.
Just bought some 205/50 15's for my b14 wheels, which will be mounted on my lowered b13, should I be worried about rubbing?? The back is only lowered 1inch. Damn I hope they don't rub.

I almost bought these too jim, I got the kumho spt 205/50 for my b14 wheels. I enjoy the kumhos. Ive had them for about a month and today was my first REAL spirted drive. They did well and i never heard them squeal. Im still on stock suspension even though i have my kyb setup assembled. The funny part, my father in law went on a drive with me, and at 60 years old he has not lost a thing. If we were both in similar cars i would have had trouble keeping up with him. Granted he knows the road and has drove it everyday for the past 20 years.
He was making me hold hte OH Sh*t the whole way. He was a old scca racer bitd. He drove a shelby gt350 until it was stolen from him in 1974 then raced a 510. He was smiling form ear to ear when he got out of my car and is talking about getting one now..lol.

Just wait till you get your new suspension installed. Not only are you gonna love it, but your father-in-law will start hunting our Classifieds for Classic.
Nice review on the tires Jim, I'm gonna need a new set soon enough.

I had the spt's on my 95 max on 17's 225/50zr17's with some tokico's and eibach springs and it was a awesome tire, like you said they would never squeal.... ever.
I would have definitely bought again, but I needed all-season performance tires and my choices were kumho asx's or the 912's.....Well I went with the 912's because everybody recommended them over the kumho's.

I just got some 185/60-14 512s for the Miata & 205/55-15 912s for the xB. I was blown away by the sidewall stiffness of the 912s! Almost as stiff as the Azenis! ( 'o') ! The 512's feel like paper in comparison. The xB currently has 205/55-15 512s & the 205/55-15 912s do look wider.
i got some for the evo since the advans lasted me only 25k too much fun..
245/45/17 great ride quality and yes, I do love'em, specially at 420 for a set mounted and balanced!

Although, I talk to it and let her know that she is still my number 1
just looked up specs of the new 912's. all the 60/65 series side walled tires have a tread wear of 420, all others are 320 with AA traction......thats out standing for an all-season!
the 205/45/16 205/40/16 and 215/55/16 sizes have reinforced sidewalls.....all others are normall (yet it seems the sidewalls are still nice and stiff from what im hearing from all of you)
buy reading the specs of these tires i would have to say this is the best performance all-season tire you will find out there today..................they have a 320 tread wear!!!! thats a soft ass UHP allseason
hahahahaha. i was just looking at all the reviews i could find, then started looking at prices. 101 tire has them in the 205/50/15 size for $100 each.................. vulcantire.com has them for $50

Do us all a favor and keep us updated on tire wear, snow ability (I had the 512's and they were terrible), and how many miles you get on them.
Glad to hear the sidewall is a little better, the 512 rolled on me allot (even at 40psi)
Not jacking your thread Jim, but i drove the 512 in snow with not problems. Granted we never get more then a couple inches at a time but if your are driving in a foot of snow i guess they would suck
Falken makes a good product. Before my currents my faverite tire was a bridgestone re 01. I love the kumho so far. I hear they have incredible water traction but my car does not really see rain. I have rode in Fosters car with the 615 and like everyone else i like those alot too.

I just got my 912's 205/50 15's for my b14 wheels at vulcan. I am mad I missed the 100 discount from discount tire last week, but I didn't have the funds at the time....
I ended up paying 244 shipped for all 4 with new valve stems, so I'm happy
Can't wait to have these mounted and i hope they don't rub..
I was looking to buy some Falken 912's on- line but the $100 off offer had expired. So, as I continued to look at tires I saw that my local discount tire actually had the same offer in-store. However, I ended up going with 4 - 245/45/18" Yokohoma 520's for our CTS. They didn't have the 912's in that size locally, and since people have said that the 512's aren't that great on snow, I chose to go with something that I know will be good in rain and ocassional snow. I heard about the $100 off on this forum and was able to get the $100 of 4, so thanks.
I drove all last night with them on... I can definitely say these tires are great... the still do have the rim protector... and I love them. Yes, I love them.
They don't make much noise, and they grip well... i'll take some pics when i get some time....
