Struts question... please help!

So i bought a set of struts for my gf's 1.6 2dr for the front, old ones were totally blown.. On the new struts, the first thing i noticed is that one strut was a lot harder to push down then the other... since these were purchased from ebay i just put them on for now.. to my surprise when i put them on the car the side with the strut that was harder to push down is a lot easier to push down when on the car!! the other side is nice and stiff.. also the strut that was hard to push down makes the "dampening noise" when pushed down and the other does not... Now my question is, Which strut is the bad one??? Please voice your opinions i need to get one exchanged!
