Help! Replacing Rear Struts - 95 200sx

ok here we go

Last year or so I put on the rm/kyb set up all the way around on my 95 200sx se-r. From day one it felt like sh*t bascially. I just thought maybe it was a bad combo so I kinda just lived with it. Less then a year later, my left rear strut blew. And not just blew, but sheered off clean. Im pretty much sure the guy I was refered too was a hack, or just didnt really care about installing it right.

So heres what im doing. I wanna pull out the broken strut, and the right rear unblown strut and spring as well. But im not completely sure on how to go about doing that. Im gonna end up putting in Monroe struts, and before you guys jump on me, I use this car WAY to much for work, and its lifetime warrenty haha Plus Im not all sure what else aside from the struts I need to replace. I took a bunch of pictures to give u guys and gals a good idea on wtf im even talking about lol

Ok first heres the broke strut. I was able to pull the spring off by hand (was surprised it held as long as it did with me driving on it).

As you can see, it broke pretty. I thought kyb was good? lol So as far as removing it, I know you have to loosin the two bolts in the trunk above the wheel well, but not the center. As far as the bottom bolt goes, what size bolt is it? I tried breakin it lose with my impact gun, but I didnt have an actually wrench for the inner bolt. Is there a trick to getting it out?

Now as far as the "hat" on top of the spring/strut. Im not sure how the one is on the good side, but on the broke side it looks like the strut wore a bigger hole in the side of it.

Now is it me or is that not supposed to be like that? haha And what exactly are all three of the pieces called? I would like to buy a new one, seeing as its pretty much shot. I thought it was a strut mount, but when I went to autozone and bought one, all I got was this.

Im pretty sure thats just the top piece that goes actually ON the strut correct? I needed that anyways, but I need the other pieces are well.

Now heres the passenger side, working strut. As you can see, the road magnet spring is still on the strut. What would be the right way to take it out without it blowin out in my face? Ive heard you can take out the whole thing without taking off the spring first? But then when i do that, how can i compress the spring? I rented a spring compressor, and it wont fit on the road magnets. Any ideas?

One last thing, i took this picture inside my trunk for the working strut. I was wondering if this looked odd to anyone, shouldnt it be sitting in the center?

Thanks again guy. Please please please, any help. Sooner the better. Need to get this finally fixed haha

geez, where do I start...
My friend, you are going about it the hard way.
Firstly, ok, you got the top 2 bolts off, now the one on the bottom.
I think u need 2 size 17 box wrenches or sockets. Turn the nut on one side while holding the bolt with a wrench/socket on the other side.
Piece of cake eh?

another thing, you don't need a spring compressor to remove ur road magnets & it may be eaiser to remove the struts from ur car & then the springs. The compression w/ ur spring combo will not hurt you. It may pop off, but no worries, I promise.

almost forgot, to put the spring back on the new strut, you may need someone to push down on the upper mount enough to compress the spring to allow you to re-mount the top mount.

secondly, the parts u got from autozone will not fix ur problem with the top rear mount. check the forums for a used upper mount or buy an aftermarket one from bluebomber...

the last picture of your rear mount looks fine to me.
it does not mount straight up. it kinda goes in at an angle.

thanks for the help. I know it sounds like im being retarded but i wanted to make sure I was as clear as i could be. Might as well get as many answers as I could. But as far as the rear upper mount part, can you just get one locally or is that something id have to order offline? Just wondering because I wanna see how much more time this might take.

thanks again though

no problem.
retarded people are the people who are shame to ask questions.

the upper mount can be found locally & is not a specialty part. check the classifieds though, maybe you can get one cheap. I got 3 sets, but it would cost too much to ship it out. tire rack also has them incase you want to buy it new.

Oh and my question to anyone out there - What caused the problem in the OP's post? And how do you prevent it?

The thing is that I've seen a number of Motivational rear mount that have similar wear in the center hole, but never to that extreme. I wonder if the guy just didnt tighten the center bolt and the shaft acted as a saw on the top hat.

exactly what I was going to suggest.
if that is the case, I am supprised u did not hear
the shaft banging against anything?
this also does occur if he forgets to put back any of
the washers or bushing too.
