My steering feels sloppy through turns, but had no rattles over bumps, so I inspected all of the bushings and ball joints on the front suspension. None of them were bad, amazingly good for the age (136000 miles). But when I pulled and pushed on the steering rod, I heard a knocking noise. Using a screwdriver as a stethoscope I was able to hear the knocking from the steering rack. The knocking, I'm assuming is from slop. Should there be any slop in the steering rack? If so, how much is acceptable? and how would you measure that?
The bushings holding the rack are good, the rattle is withing the rack itself, or the intermediate rods adjacent to them. Should there be any slop at all?
did you use the stethoscope with the car running? or have you done a power steering delete? power steering racks can have slop with the car off (ie. no power steering) while making clicking or knocking sounds, and thus the same can be said for a power rack that's had a power steering delete.
if everything's still copasetic, stetho the rack again with the car on. if you still have the clacking, replace it.
Nope, I have not tried it with the car running. why would it matter if the car is on or not?
it does. reason being is without the fluid being pressurized by the bump, there's room for play in the rack.
when i did a dry park check on my car initially with the car off, there was play in the rack. turned the car on and double checked and it was fine. which is good because i saved myself from buying a rack.
when was the last time the car had an alignment? and is the car lowered/how low? would be good to have it checked. my steering felt really sloppy when it needed one.
That makes sense. I will try that on Sunday and see how it goes. Honestly, I havn't gotten the alignment done since I have bought it. I will get that done asap. Thank you for the advice

if you've done suspension work, you'll need an alignment.
can you rebuild the racks?

if you replaced suspension parts the car needs an alignment. if you did it yourself and found that the alignment didn't stick, it means that you missed a part that needs to be replaced. ie a ball joint, or tie rod end. only way to tell if a rack is pooched is to check for play in the rack with car turned on. if there is play in the rack, replace it.
