way too much involved in this to re explain. use the search function. only intelligent way to do it is full custom fab for the rear usin an awd tranny and any diff you want or use all GTI-R stuff and just a little fab work for to mount the rear subframe. the latter way is very easy just finding the parts is not easy.

use an b12 awd rear assembly they have the right gear ratio to match a gtir tranny
you can mate it to the chassis easier than a gtir assembly. seriously one day i will photo all the stuff i have left from my kn13 awd-t car......

I'd suggest you wait until 2014 when the 1989 vehicles become legal for importation into the United States. This is a lot of work. In the end you will spend a lot of money and chop up your car. All that time and money spent could have been used on a factory awd car that will be faster than your project.

I can understand if this was 1998 and the 25 year mark was a long time away. The 25 year mark is now only 2 years away. Just save up some money and practice some patience.

just buy a coupe subaru impreza that is already awd and manual, then swap in newer wrx sti engine and trans. alot easier, WAY more power and better quality structure, and depending on where you live, the coupe imprezas might be easy to come by. The only reason I would make my b14 awd after all the crazy work dude had to do to get it to work (however I have never heard of using the gtir or b12 rear subframes for the conversion, research it, it might be as easy as they say) is because the body had no rust whatsoever and I loved the how the body looks 100%
