Actually, bought a set of the rubber thingies from Advance - they're cheaper stuff but stiffer than the stock ones, that tied it down enuff to keep even the 3" hole from banging on the sides.

You don't really notice the sound at all when banging the top of 3rd gear going through the Esses at Road Atlanta.....

Problem fixed !!! No more clunks. I did what narcotix said with the tubing on each end of the coil. Went to Lowes, bought about 8' of clear vinyl tubing, 5/8" od by 1/2" id, this will fit like a glove and be nearly invisible when in place. You will need to lube both the coils and the inside of the tubing . I found that dish washing liquid worked the best. I put the tubing over about 2 1/2 coils on the tightly wound end, and about 1 1/2 on the loosely wound end. I did this because I wasn't sure if the clunking could have been due to the end coils hitting each other on rapid compression.
I assembled the strut with the stock rubber gaskets held in place with silicone sealer, and cable ties holding the end coil to the struts, a little extra insurance.
As the right rear "seemed" to be making all the noise I did that side first. Took it for a test drive and not a sound !! But you should have heard all the noise I had been missing from the left.
Now with both sides done it drives and handles like it should. Thanks for all the advice

Keep an eye on the tubing way in - you may be in far enough to where coils to come together under compression and if so the tubing may wear quickly - BUT, shouldn't hurt a thing. You might want to clip it back if/when that happens just to keep it from getting in the way. Else, I'm going to do on the back what I did on the front this weekend. Cool.

I'll keep an eye on it. I suppose if it wears through the evil clunk will return. Also not sure how the cold weather will affect the pliability of the tubing. Time will tell.

If you don't get the wear you want, switch to the heater hose; the vinyl might not hold up as long. It's black, and nobody sees in there anyway. DO let us know what it looks like in 6 months or so, you might have done a better thing using the vinyl rather than the heater hose!
