Can anybody tell me why my Hypercoil/Agx setup will clunk, only in the rear, when going over a bump. I've seen other posts about it but no real reason or fix for the problem. I'd rather not keep turning the radio up. Thanks.
Check out those center 17mm nut and 3x12mm holdin' the strut assembly to the car...a member of good standin' have posted about replacin' the springs rubber seats with pieces of rubber tubin' pushed into the coil top and bottom with excellent results...
Thanks for the reply. Today I put a bead of silicone sealer on both sides of the top and bottom rubber spring gaskets, placed cable ties around the end coils to each of the spring mounts and cranked down all of the mounting nuts really tight.
Still clunks. Got to fix this before my BMW driving brother takes it out for a test drive.
Like brokeser posted, the culprit seems to be a bit of coilbind at compression from the rear springs. I tie-wrapped my springs to the seats on the struts to no avail. Still clunked. You can either grab some rubber sping insulator stuff (the sprial-wrap rubber stuff some OEM's use to isolate the spring) or some tubing that matches the O.D. of the coil wire and slide it up the coil a few winds.
That should solve it. It wasn't the nut that held the hat onto the strut shaft either. I stacked a few washers thinking I ran out of thread, and it still clunked. I grabbed my industrial-force Ingersoll-Rand impact and cranked up my air pressure to 120 psi and it still clunked (not to mentioned that it almost stripped the threads).
Buena Suerte!

It worked with my spring/strut combo. But if the situation is with coilovers, it may be noise inherent with the whole setup. Any suspension with spherical bearing. or monoball, or "pillowball," mounting of the upper strut hat will have some noise -- especially after a few miles on them. With camber plates or pillowball mounts, you don't have any rubber or poly insulators to keep things from clunking.
Also, if you have short springs on your coilovers, you can have the springs unseat from the perches over bumps that can cause a rattle or clunk.
Hm. I'll try the tubing, I did that on the front to replace the thin little insulators Nissan supplies. Works GREAT on the front. Rear I just used the nissan stuff, I've had a little clunk from the right rear since I did the Hyperco/AGX. Thanx for the post, just hadn't worried about it (car's so noisy it doesn't matter much :-) ).

If you don't have the patience
to do it right the first time,
how is it you have the time to
do it over and over again?

It was your post that I was refering to....on my post... Now bust out a pic on how yours look in the front... Ahem...if possible.
Well, as you know, this old geezer hasn't yet learned how to link pics directly here - I PROMISE I'll learn that tiny little datum - no time now, but here: http://photo.angrylabs.com/main.php?g2_itemId=112
NO clunks; without the stupid coating on the springs it'd go on much easier (on the other hand they don't slip off - -), 6" piece; if I were to do it again I might go to 9" and bring it around where it might tap the spring seat on the 'front'.
Notice I left about a half inch off the end of the spring to sit in the pocket. DO take a file or grinder and round off the tip of the spring to approximate the shape of the seat pocket, else I'd bet it'd go through the hose as fast as the end of an un-filed AGX will go through the stock nissan insulator.

Hi Chris!
Pickup bed coating, brush-, not spray-on - forget the brand - somebody suggested it would dampen vibration tendencies (I was chasing noises) - I'm sure it does! BUT, PITA, INCREDIBLY messy, and not sure it made a hill of beans worth of difference. We can be pretty confident they won't rust - - - -

The b13 that I was talking about has it's only clunk in the right rear also.

Likely idea, Hank, and I tied it down with new rubbers, BUT, yes, still possible. I get it even coming off the carport lip (about a quarter inch drop) - and it's about the only time I really notice it, 'cause the rest of the time there's so many other rattles clanks and buzzes - - -. I have to shake the pipes pretty hard to get 'em to touch anything now.

Hey Jerry, this thread just got referenced in the Suspension thread.
I tried to download your photo to my computer, then upload it from there. Incorrect format??? Usually I just click, save as, and bingo I have it.
Any help anybody, please PM. I'd like to have Jerry's photo to put into the thread. Referenced as to where it came from of course.
And I have the clunk in the right front. I'm pretty damn sure that is what it is.

Shawn, I have the original file here - probably about 1mb as I took them at not quite but almost full resolution; my kid reduced it with photoshop before he put 'em up there. Happy to email a copy of the fat one to you. OR I can get him to ship off the reduced resolution piece to you. No clue why you couldn't pop it off his site; he's an IT type (runs a commercial wireless ISP) - maybe he protected them, but can't imagine why. Anyway, nbd on credit; if you think it'll help folks, by all means use it.

Sent you a PM with my email addy.
Everybody, every source, and every thread gets credited my friend. It's like a research paper.
I just added some new information today, besides this thread.
I sooooo wish I would have known about this fix before the installation.
