Try not to drench the alternator!

I killed my first alternator by washing my engine bay.

i clean my engine bay with gunk degreaser and high pressure water about 3-4 times a year. i just like to keep it clean. use high pressure water so you use less water.
-spray degreaser
-rinse it with high pressure water
-air dry it with high pressure
-turn-on engine to dry up the fumes from degreaser
-spray formula 2001(optional)

Simple Green website:

Engine Washing: Cover distributor cap and plugs with aluminum foil to protect. Spray down the cool engine with a 1:1 dilution of Simple Green & water. Let solution sit for about 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse with cool water. Some cracks and crevices, or extremely dirty engines might require some light scrubbing with a non-metallic bristle brush before rinsing. If you clean a metal surface, particularly aluminum, and it is not repainted right away, be sure to apply a light machine oil to protect from oxidation and displace moisture.

ive acutally found out that just a normal degreaser will do the job. cover up alternator with plastic wrap, ecu, and air filter with the plastic wrap. then let the engine have it with all the degreaser from a spray bottle. get some brushes and start brushing. close the hood with all the degreaser on it, and wash the car. then come back and mist over the engine bay. it'll work perfectly fine.

i know this is an old thread.....and i have no idea why it was bumped

any who. i have found simple green is the best to use on the rubber and painted parts. but if you want to get the cacked on gunk that is seaping out of your engine cavities use gum cutter 2+2. it will melt grime right off (be carefull....will melt paint too.
