Front ones are a slightly heavier gauge 'wire' - and a bit longer. Put the "wide" end (more spacing between coils) down. You should see an "F" and an "R" stamped on each coil.

The ones in the picture are from the first Group Buy. I was the first person to get them and install them on my car.

Also, as far as how the lettering was stamped. Let's just say they didn't have high paid employees doing it. So they weren't always right side up etc. And there were different things stamped on them through the various runs.

There's been tons of debates about this on the forum. Hell, I don't even remember which was is "right". In the end, I don't think it makes much difference.

I spoke directly with the Hyperco engineer who designed them when I was installing mine. The more tightly wound end goes up. When the spring is responding to road changes (i.e., bumps), you want the 'soft' end of the progressive spring to respond first, so you want it, if you will, closest to the bump. If it has to wait for the energy to transmit through the high rate end of the spring, response will be slower and ride will be harsher. If you look at any factory installation of progressive rate springs the low rate end of the spring will be "down."
That being said, the engineer said you'd be hard pressed in normal driving to feel the difference if you had two identical cars with one 'upside down.' My guess is that it'd make a HUGE difference if you were racing competitively, (maybe a half second or second a lap on a relatively smooth course like Road Atlanta, more on a rough course like Sebring), but anyone racing is going to run coilovers anyway.

There is a post somewhere about this with what the actual engineer said. In the end, its really not a big deal if they are installed upside down. The difference is pretty insignificant and odds are you wont be able to tell the difference. And yeah, your right, the tightly wound coils should be at the top.
