Thinking hard about parting out

I tore apart my original engine yesterday at my cousin's shop. The original had 150k and developed rod knock when I first bought the car. After opening up the bottom end it looks like I'll need a lot more than I had originally thought. The UK SR20 inside the car is knocking as well and I'm at the point I'm thinking of parting out the car. Sad as it seems...the car is worth more in parts than it is complete. I had some big plans with the car to do HPDE track days and AutoX. Looks like I might start looking for something else down the road. Too bad SOKO isn't around to sell cheap engines anymore.

It's been fun.

What kind of shape is the car in, and what mods does it have? Seems a shame to part out the car 'just' because it needs a new engine.

Definately don't part it out. Its sad to see a worthy classic go to the scrapper. If it was rusted to sh*t, thats understandable. When my old motor was hitting the crapper, the thought of parting out didn't cross my mind once.

Luckily I found a cheap JDM motor. I'm destined to get this car on the roadcourse.

Glad you decided not to part and scrap it ... there's an increasing shortage of solid SE-R's and it's only going to get worse as time goes by. To echo Chriscar, I think it would have been a real shame for one to get junked just because it needed a motor.

There's a certain someone on this board that seems to make a living out of scraping SE-Rs. What can you do though? It's sad when our cars are worth more in parts rather than complete.

Bumping for good news. Thanks to Toolapcfan I now have a motor to drop in. I'm going to try and get it all done this weekend. I also have a replacement P/S rack. The tie-rod ends are bad and it needs one steering boot, but other than that it should be good.

Any tips/tricks for inspecting the rack with the damaged steering boot and installing new tie rod ends?

Also I think this steering rack is from a 91 or 92. My car is a 93. Should that matter? I called around and the boots aren't available anywhere so far. I might have to order from Nissan. The guy at O'Reillys Auto Parts told me he needed my VIN to get the right tie rod end. My VIN will be different from the car this rack came from.

It doesn't matter, all SE-R's have the same p/n. They probably need the VIN to get an engine code or something along those lines.

Toolapcfan came over and we started working on the car. We'll get a lot more done tomorrow.

I removed the hood, started her up and turned her around. Yep...she still runs and drives. "It just makes this knocking noise."

The donor

Ready for removal. We got all the connections marked and disconnected. All fluids drained. Radiator and complete A/C system removed (anyone want to buy the A/C).

Then maybe you should buy my cookies.

I really wished I had held out and bought a DET or VE, but I just need to get this thing road-worthy once again. I'm tired of it stuck in the garage. I'm a windshield and alignment away from getting some track time on the roadcourses.

Okay...lots of hard work was put in this weekend on the B13 (now I call it El Blanco Diablo). Big thanks to Toolapcfan (Rob) for all the help. We got the old motor out and installed the replacement P/S rack from a donor car. We had a battle with replacing tie rod ends however.

The motor is now dropped in, but I'm missing a bolt. One of the rear tranny mount bolts has been misplaced. It's the one that goes in the middle which is slightly difficult to get to. Can someone tell me which bolt this is? Maybe I can find another bolt that will work. Any help would be appreciated. I can't find any exploded views from the online B13 repair guide I have.
