How To: B-pillar seat belt swap/B14 seat belt conversion

SEE DISCLAIMER AT THE BOTTOM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY MODIFICATION TO YOUR VEHICLE

A few months ago I re-purchased SE-R (for the 2nd time lol). Personally, I don't feel that I can trust the door mounted belts with my life, or the life of my passenger. There was a very tragic accident a little while back where the father of an SE-R enthusiast was ejected from the car and killed because the door opened and the B13 door mounted belt failed to keep him secure. I decided to retrofit B14 seat belts into my car for safety reasons.

The top mount and bottom mount threaded holes were already installed at the factory when the car was built:

There was no existing provision to mount the retractor assembly so I came up with my own solution. I had nuts welded to some fender washers. I drilled holes and ran 2 additional bolts to hold the washers in place and add strength to the mounting system.

Here is a shot of them bolted up:

I didn't get a chance to take pics but I mounted the belt guides just below the side window plastic trim panels. I also cut some of the cardboard material away from the back of the lower trim panels for extra clearance.

I think they turned out pretty well:

I also swapped the latch mechanisms from the B14 seats onto the B13 seats. I don't have pics but its pretty self explanatory. The B14 belts did clip into the stock B13 latches but they felt funny when they engaged so I swapped over to the B14 ones to be safe.

I am NOT an engineer, nor do I design cars for a living. If you attempt to copy this method of modifying your car you do so at your own risk. I will not be held liable in the event of injury and/or death under any circumstances. AGAIN, THIS MODIFICATION IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Thanks guys.

SE-Riouse_93: Nissan didn't use conventional seat belts because they must have thought having a standard equipment airbag on all the2dr Sentras was too expensive at the time. The government phased in a requirement that all cars be equipped with passive safety devices. They used the door mounted belts (which are actually supposed to be left buckled all the time) to fulfill that requirement.

This is one of the (if not the only) reason Nissan was not able to offer B13 SE-Rs to Canada. The Z32 300zx has the same problem but NissanNA addressed it so they could be sold there.

Those door mounted belts are totally unsafe, but you actually get a small insurance discount for them. Nice write up.

Just another reason why the NX is the superior B13.

Sweet conversion Matt!!

In Canada, the B13 Sentra 2 door arrived in 94 and was made until 96, but only with the GA16 engine. In these cars, the seat belt retrators are actually located under the triangular rear window.

Hmm i just happen to have a b14 in my garage and no rear interior in my b13 i think its time i do this just for safety. How does the seat belt come off the door or is there really any way to remove it? it looks strangely attached. Maybe its easier to remove then im thinking. I dont have my car here to look at.

B13 Tsurus have the factory belts in the doors. I bet the trim panels and hardware are available through the dealerships.. could be a nice combo headlight and seatbelt conversion.

Its very easy to remove the door mounted belts. Just pull the panel off and unbolt them. I just removed mine this past w/e.

I need to finish doing this, so I can add the B14 power door locks. The seat belts are in the way of the solenoids.

Looks good Matt. Very similar to installing S14 belts in an S13, and getting rid of the awful motorized belts that came in the car...

Thanks guys! I got to spend a few hours testing them out this past w/e and they are sooooooooooooooooooooo much better than the door mounted ones. They don't rub my neck like the old door ones and they feel 100% more secure.

I'm sure that you could use NX or even the belts from a B13 4-door..

I honestly wonder what would happen if you got in an accident and the crash reporters found out that you modified the original safety design.

I totally agree that it is safer than the stupid stock SE-R belts, but I just wonder what would happen in that situation.
