Looking at a SE-R

I'm going to look at 94 SE-R next weekend and I'm wondering if you guys would be will ing to give me some things to look for. I know the general rules but am looking for things specific to this car. I know the engine is knocking and the chassis has about 160k. It's going to end up my daily.

I've been out of the SR realm for a while since I sold my 240 but I'm anxious to get back in with the SE-R, honestly I miss the motor.

Any help is appreciated.

For a Classic, you're gonna wanna check the door jambs & rockers for rust. Those are the main rust spots for B13s. Also, when you test drive it, take it on the highway. Put it into 5th gear, let go of the shifter and stab the gas. If the shifter pops out, you've got 5-th gear pop-out. Happens to classics that were beaten on or driven hard. THe tranny will need a rebuild kit at least, so keep that in mind also. Youo said it's got a knocking motor? I hope this is gonan be rebuilt? Or swapped out? A knocking motor can't be good at ALL. Just don't get ripped off and make sure the car is solid. Good luck bro.

Thanks!

I am intending on rebuilding the motor. It does have some rust, but it will be fixed on my part. It has a cut in the door, about 4" long below the handle, the fog lights are missing, interior is clean, and the body is straight. There is some faded paint but for the most part its an avg. 160k mile car. Previous owner was a college student on a 100 mile commute.

There won't be any cash floating around, we're doing a trade for a S13 SR20DET motorset that I pulled out of my car, he had a guy offer him $900 but he's interested in starting a 240 project. The motor is basically a long block and tranny with everything but the elctronics and turbo. So in short it will be a S13 SR20DET long block and tranny for a 94 SE-R with rod knock. We'll probably spend the same amount to get them running, lol.

Body work is a big one, look for mismatching panels, my headlights were slightly off and the guy told me that the got wrecked in a minor accident, and I thought nothing else of it until I got a chance to look under the car, after I bought it and saw weld marks on the frame rails in the front. Put it on a lift for sure before you buy, and don't get overly anxious like me.

I hope you don't plan on trying to get the S13 SR20DET motor into an SE-R, you know that the blocks are different and the SE-R tranny will not bolt up to that block

Sell the longblock off and pick up a good JDM SR20 and pocket the difference

I appreciate all of your help, I went and checked it out Saturday. It looks like it had sat for some time, judging by the corrosion and whatnot throughout the engine bay. I was surprised that the engine wasn't knocking as bad as I anticipated, just noisy, almost like valvetrain noise as opposed to rod knock.

I agreed to the trade and am now the proud owner of a white 1994 SE-R. It did have some rust issues, but they are pretty minor and will be fixed along with fresh paint. It has no sunroof or cruise, but does have AC. The interior looked good, except for the crack in the dash(oh how that bothers me). She's a little rough but it gives me something to tinker with until I can pay off the Z.

Hopefully I'll have it next weekend, if not it will be the weekend after that. I'll post up some pictures, maybe start a build thread.

Now I just have to sell my beater...
