My Classic Auto-X Beater

Oh yeah, can you feel it? A 1994 Nissan Sentra SE-R beat to hell, but relatively unmolested by any tuner kids. Just a bit neglected. Soon to be terrorizing the streets of LA! Well, the parking lots at least.

Picked this up from a guy who inherited this from the original owner about four years ago. Don't let my photog skillz fool you. This dog needs attention to almost every part of it. I think the driver's side front fender and the trunk are the only panels unscathed. Maybe the roof.

What an oddity. Power mirrors, power sunroof, cruise control, airbag, but crank windows and manual door locks?

Stuff added: Valve cover gasket, Optima Red Top, plugs, wires, cap, belts.

Coming soon: rims and tires, Dual XHD/USB radio, infinity Kappa door speaks, pass side mirror glass and rear side marker light, shift boot and coilovers.

Need to do: new windshield, fix trunk leak, chase down dash lights off issue, fix bouncy tach needle, tint, new headlights or refinish, new fog lights....what else.

I wanted something original that I could update and mod.

Wish me luck!

Here it is after picking it up at the tint shop. Nice. Check out the clear side markers I added. Next pic will be with new Kosei's and Kumhos. Later this week, I hope!

Just got the Kosei's back from the rim and tire shop. Suh-wheet! Next pic will be the car with them on. Right now, poor baby's at Modesti's getting a clutch cable replaced!

Yep, that one. I might have paid a bit too much for it. Maybe by a couple hundred. But, compared to some of the other cobbled-together POS's floating around, like the scumbag at S&J Auto in OC was trying to unload for $4000, it's a gem!

That's why I was the first to see it and didn't haggle too much. Even with all the little things that needed to be dealt with, I knew from having seen enough of them around here, it was a decent one to start with. A lot of peeps here overprice theirs thinking they're collectibles already. (Getting there! But not just yet.)

The blustery used car salesass at S&J tried to pull a fast one on me.

Here was the CL ad:

No price listed should have been the first warning sign.

I called on it and discovered it was a dealer. Loud and boisterous, he claimed to know nothing about it. Feigning confusion over the model.."SE-what did you say?" Ugh. Kept talking about all the kids with no money showing up trying to put the car on layaway. Telling me the guy who traded it in (a friend, he claimed) told him you could spend $1500 for a turbo and blow away Corvettes.

Told me it was in great shape. Never been in an accident. Drives great. A/C blows cold. (He mentioned the A/C like five times.) Told me he was asking $3999, but if I came a wrote a check he'd knocl $500 off it.

Well, we got down there and discovered a lot of things wrong with the car.

First, the entire body was covered with dents. Small ones. Not just dings. But bumps as well. Like it had been belted with baseballs and punched from the inside. The interior was a mess. The seats and door panels looked good. But were missing screws and didn't match the headliner.

The rear trunk was misaligned and shifted on it's hinges when opened. We pulled the trunk mat up and found the whole trunk floor covered with water. And, while it could have been from the common taillight leak (which I am now dealing with! ), the trunk looked as if it was from another car, and SE-R, but another car. Which would explain this next picture!

But the scariest thing was this on the doorjam:

You tell me what that means. To me, it says I've done some questionable things to this car and don't want you to know what I've done.

THEN, I decided to tell the dealer I talked to that I had to think about the car and he put the hard sell on me. He started to insult me by asking why I drove 30 miles for a stupid $3000 car and not even buy it. He was trying to bully me into buying the piece of crap and I wasn't going for it. He then said he'd give me the number of the guy who traded in the car so I could ask more questions. Had me follow him into his office. He then called the guy on the speakerphone and said, "Ask away!" to me.

WTF?

I asked the guy if I could get his number and call him later. The dealer was getting all blustery telling me to just ask the questions. So, I started to ask questions. Hard questions. And the guy on the phone started to get abusive. The dealer chimed in.

By this time, I had had enough. Perhaps I was taking it too personally. But don't keep talking about how stupid I am for driving down to see a car and not even buy it, let alone take it for a test drive. I said, "This discussion is over. I don't need to be spoken to like this." And left.

The guy was still yelling at me as I walked out and got into my car.

It's S&J Auto Sales on Beach Blvd in Stanton, CA. Joe is the owner that thought he could bully me into paying for his Katrina-mobile.

No, no. The one I just posted about was one that I did NOT buy because the dealer was an ass. The one I DID BUY was from a private seller. Keep up with us, Man!

The door jamb sticker was most likely the victim of the worn-out non-retracting drivers side seatbelt. More than a few times, my seat belt buckle has gotten wedged between the door jamb and the door -- right on the sticker...

$4K for a Classic. Wow, these cars just may become future collectibles. The rule for a collectible is when a used car costs more than what it did new. With the USD heading the way of the Peso, I wonder how long it will be before we see a mint $11,999 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R.

I dunno. It sure seems like the particular info was scratched off. Nevertheless, there were too many issues with that one and the stealer was a d*ckwad, so I passed. Incidentally, I paid less than half for mine from a private party.

My SE-R has the same messed up decal because of the seatbelt. None the less, that car still looked like a pile for the money he was asking. I picked up my unmolested 92 SE-R for $1000 bucks from the original owner last year, and it was in better condition than that. Still had the original stock radio in it!

my label looks the same and it's from the door hinge sagging. (easily fixed by grabbing hinges off a 4 door...smaller door = less weight = less sag)
