stuck in reverse

91 sentra se-r

so for the past week ive been hearing some whining noises when i drive my car but thought nothing of it. then one day when i down shifted it made a loud screeching sound so i took it out of gear. i was thinking i needed some transmission oil because my tranny has a very small leak and i havent put checked it since feb. to make sure i was good on oil. so the day after that thought i was driving around normal and when i went to park i backed into a parking spot but the gear grinded and when i tried to take it out it was stuck in reverse. any idea as to why its stuck in reverse? the car still drives because i had to have it towed to my home and i backed it into my garage... if anyone has had this problem please let me know whats up and what it cost you to fix it.

First thing you will have to do is look at it. Make sure it is nothing with your shift linkage. Easiest way to do this is disconnect your linkage at the transmission and try to shift it right at the tranny.
Next you will have to take it out, bust the case open, find the broken parts, and replace them. Most people don't have the tools needed to do this. When you drain the oil look for excessive metal chunkys.

Most of the time when cars are stuck in gear it is the linkage/cables or the shfit collars/rods they connect too.

Miatas commonly do this and you can pop out the reverse switch jam a screw driver in there, pop it back in place and it's fine again.

The easiest fastest way would probably be to replace it.
