I just read all this thread because I am having bad gas mileage, well I guess a little better than most people on this thread. I have my b13 commuter (completely stock) that was giving me 28 to 30 mpg mixed both city and highway before I had a bad head gasket and decided to change out the engine. I decided to replace the 237,000 mile engine with a "fresher" JDM engine that my brother used for a while before he went with a DET. He had told me that he was getting bad gas mileage, but didn't care about it because he was soon swapping it out. I put it in my car replaced the JDM intake manifold with the USDM intake manifold I took off the old engine. I also changed the water temp sensor, throttle body, TPS, IACV, exhaust manifold, oxygen sensor and distributor. Now I'm only getting 22 mpg! I did the exact same swap on my NX2K and I get 30 mpg both city and highway. Tomorrow I will change the spark plugs, spark plug cables, rotor and cap. Any suggestions?
I think a lot has to do with the krap gas nowadays. I use to get in the high 20's until the 10% corn gas additive - ethanol. Now I get 24-25mpg. I tried for good mileage and I got 25 point something. Normal driving I get 24 point something so I don't bother trying anymore. This is normal BS driving around town. On a trip, I'm in the low 30's at worst. Once I got 36mpg on a trip. My motor is all stock.

no way anyone should be getting under twenty mpg's without a turbo. Higher octane fuels(premium, ethanol) will net lower miles per gallon because they are a much "cleaner" fuel, and your motor just sees it as gas. If your motor could utilize higher octane fuels to it's fullest we could all be getting 40 plus mpg city.
HEY,
TRY USING 91 GAS AND ALSO ADD 2 BOTTLES OF FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER. YOUR GAS SYSTEM MIGHT BE JACKED UP ALSO INSTALL A NEW CAT... AND A NEW EXHAUST...IT WORKED FOR ME NOW IM GETING 20-30+MPG
id think my car would be fine with only ~48k on the clock now.... its oil is regularly changed, and such.... but i can be on the gas all the time pushin redline, or driving slower than my grandma and still get no more than 16mpg.... 200miles on one tank is un heard of!
it really pisses me off with how poor i am, and how much i have to drive
i know my cat puts off the nice rotten egg smell after i drive it alot or hard.... so does that mean my cat is dead? if so i guess its time to do a full manifold back exhaust.... my muffler has a hole in it too
wow i thought i was doing bad getting 280 miles from a full tank but guess not i should be happy... but im going to do a tune up soon hopefully my mpg comes up a little more because gas prices are ridiculous in cali! i notice that u have a bad cat i have a hi-flo cat on my car installed about a month and a half ago the car runs alot better with that on there but didnt notice any change in my gas mileage

I drive 40 miles one way in the worse part of LA. Key word: Traffic
Here is a base for you guys: I went on a trip back in '94 in my '93 se-r. My average for that trip was 30mpg(no joke). Last summer I took a trip up to wisconson in my '93 (different car, suspension mods, intake) and my first fill-up showed I got 35mpg, and round trip average gave me 29mpg. The motor has 80,000 miles, and has been well taken care of. Driving around in town I average 24mpg, and I have never seen less than 22mpg, and that's only after a string of civic and focus fags think the're cool. This is all done on 87 octane gas. Ethanol (actually cheaper here in Iowa) never see's my engine, as I have heard bad things about fuel injectors that have never heard of "ethanol". Higher octanes might increase performance, but will yield worse mpg figures.
You might think that since I live in Iowa(largest corn producer in the country) I would be praising ethanol since it's good for the local economy. But, I'm old school and corn and all of the foods it goes into should be saved for food, not for our cars, or gas prices will continue to increase with an added increase in food costs. Corn is not the most efficient way of producing ethanol, sugar cane is, but using our natural resources that lie above ground is not the answer to "saving the planet". IF anyone thinks ethanol will save the environment they can use it all they want. I have plenty more to say, but my rant stops here:
There is a way to check your o2 sensor, you have to have the engine running and turn the diagnostic screw on the ecu clockwise then counter-clockwise. This will allow the CEL to flash on and off when the o2 sensor goes from rich to lean. If it doesn't flash on and off ten times in 10 sec then the sensor is bad. Also gas mileage will vary depending on how much city driving is done. If your daily commute has more than 5min waiting at stoplights, expect lower mpg unless you have a lot of highway driving. My se-r which only has c2s, udp, phenos got 32mpg on the highway without an o2 sensor hooked up.

I'm just commenting to brag, my 356,000 mile SE-R gets 35+ mpg :-) there's a lot to be said about having a light foot.
If it ever blows up I'll swap in a DET, there goes my mileage.

im gettin about 25-27 mpg on a 171XXX engine. only mods are noisy ass full suspension coilovers and K & N filter. My drive is a mix of freeways and streets.
