Door Hinge Replacement

Quick question....must the front fender come off to replace the door hinges on a 92 SE-R? Is this something that I shouldn't attempt? Has anyone tried this?

Its pretty easy and you don't have to remove the fender. When I did mine I unplugged the wire connector so I didn't worry about messing it up. It also helps to have another person hold the door while you start the bolts.

I undid some of the fender bolts to "peel" it back some and get some room. Undoing a few fender well liner screws might help some, too. I used rags and cardboard to protect the paint.

It's a tight space, so tools can be unwieldy to use. I found a 12mm socket/wrench combination from Autozone was the lesser of the evils in my toolbox.

I took it to the body shop. I think it's a common thing for the hinges to go bad in the classics.

I did mine in about an hour. You don't even need a second person - just a floor jack with a piece of wood on top of it. As long as you replace one hinge at a time the door's not going anywhere - especially with the floor jack under it.

Jeff, thanks for the encouragement. Did you notice a difference with new hinges? I want to restore that solid feel of a newer car. I'll replace the weather strip too.

There was a definite improvement in feel and sound. The door no longer rattles over bumps like it did before also. Now I just have to do the other door!

Oh yeah, and I only did the bottom hinge. You don't need to do the top.

I just used 2 stock car jacks. On my friends ae86, only one of the hinges rattled, so we fixed it, and the other hinge had the same problem the next week. Don't know if that will happen with the b13 though.
