alternator....underhood smell

what's up,
I am from new jersey and i have a 94 classic se-r. The other day while driving i noticed a slight whirring sound coming from the engine bay while the car was idling. The sound increases with engine rpm but never gets really loud...the pitch of the noise inrceases with rpm, not the volume. I also noticed a slight electric smell coming from the engine bay. The next day i was driving to work and the noise was still there and it started to stink so i pulled over and popped the hood.... it seems the smoke was coming from the alternator, the pulley was spinning though. I also noticed some arcing between the alternator and the body of the car...there might have also been some arcing within the alternator itself. I searched but couldn't find a problem similar to mine. I have never seem an alternator do this before, did this ever happen to anyone else. Somebody reassure me!

My alt. did that, well the smell anyway. I think it was due to it getting wet from the heavy rain we had here for a couple days. But a long story short the alt. was over charging the battery and i had to get a new one. You might want to hook your battery up to a volt ohmmeter and see whats going on there.

Later,

Kevin

I agree, run a couple of tests to see what's up. Also, check to make sure all connections are secure. If you need a hand, I'm in NJ too
