quiet performance exhaust?

Is it possible to build a custom exhaust thats as quiet as the HKS, while offering the same performance benefit? If so what muffler/resonator/cat/etc should I choose? Also, where can I get these parts, and would it be worth it (cheaper then the HKS), assuming I can get the piping done cheap? ive searched, and most people looking for quiet mufflers use magnaflow. will a magnaflow muffler with a high-flow cat be as quiet as the HKS, or do i need a resonator?

any advice for building a good, quiet cat-back for cheap would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

what models offer the quietest performance, and do you use any resonators with the mufflers, or are do you just install cat, piping and muffler? also, do you know how loud they are compared to the HKS cat-back, or compared to stock?

thanks for the reply!

HKS exhaust/the quietness issue

I have an HKS on my '91 and the inside of the resonator fell apart. I ended up cutting that out and welding in a 17" long Dynomax glasspack and it sounds EXACTLY the same.
MY POINT: It's the main muffler that gives the HKS a quiet growl, so any 'ol perforated core glasspack will work as a resonator. HKS main muffler is just a huge-ass perforated-core straight-through, so you should be able to achieve a very similar sound with a large-bodied universal rice muffler from the local speed shop, such as one of the bigger Apex'i pieces. I'll measure the HKS body to let you know the size if you want.
HKS says the tip design keeps it from sounding so raspy, but I'm not sure I really buy that.

sure, if you could measure your muffler, that would give me a good idea how big i need to go to achieve that level of quietness. thanks for the info!

i just got my new exhaust from www.vrsexhaust.com just the other day. so far ive had it for 2 days now and i gotta tell you, i love the sound. i wanted an extra quite exhaust, but didnt want to restrict the performance of my turbo. i got a 2.5 downpipe, 2.5 magnaflow freeflow cat, 2.5 22inch long magnaflow resonator, and the 2.5 piping kit! i kept my Apexi N1 turbo mffler with it. the sound is lovely!! very nice mellow growl. not raspy and buzzy like all the other imports

for the Vrsexhaust 2.5 downpipe, 2.5 magnaflow resonator, and and 2.5 tubing kit, and shipping to Los angeles from florida, it cost me $400 then i took the kit to a muffler shop were the guy hooked me up. he sold me a maganaflow freeflowing 2.5in cat for $50. then he welded on all the flanges and hangers to the piping, sawed off my Apexi N1 muffler from my old 3 inch pipe and welded it to the vrs piping and bolted it all up for another $40. so $490 total! IMHO, $490 is a good price for a complete 2.5in madnrel bent exhaust sytem. somtimes you cant even find Catbacks for that price
