engine removal

Well, my stepson's car need a new engine. Here are the questions:
1) I assume that same engine can hook up to either manual or auto trans, correct?

2) Which way is the best way to remove the engine, from above or below? From looking at the service manual, it looks like it's being move from the bottom. My problem is, I don't have a lift. Anyone ever lift the engine off from above? How tough is it? Thank for your help.

1) Correct.
2) I've done both from the top and bottom. Its definitely easier from the bottom. You don't need a lift, just jack up the front of the car so that the bottom of the bumper is 31" or so off of the ground. You'll need a nice 3 ton jack and jackstands to acheive that height.

I removed from the bottom on 2 SE-R's, and it is easier than from the top. I installed the tranny to the engine, and then I set it on my creeper to roll it under. I was actually surprised my cheap cheaper could handle it, but it did.

Also, I used seatbelts instead of chain to lift the car and the engine - easier to deal w/. That was a tip from a fellow board member.

Good luck,

Josh

Best way I have done it so far...

Get a hoist, and drop the engine on the ground. If you dont have a hoist, use a jack, and have someone hold the engine while you jack it down. Once its on the ground, get a jack that can lift the car up pretty hight, or use a regular hydyraulic jack with a block of wood, so you can raise the car high enough to pull the engine out. Then slide it out.

If you lift it from the top, you either gotta drop the tranny first or angle it so it can come out with the tranny. I find it easier to just drop both engine and tranny through the bottom and slide it out.

OR hire a HULK-A-ASIAN to haul it out with a rope!

Hulk-a-Asians are good to have around during a swap. Also, if you're man enough, you don't need a hoist...just a jack, a thick rope, and an old and beat up Stillen strut bar for leverage

wolfcri from here on the board showed me the seatbelt trick, and we've been using it since day 1. I'm sure we weren't the first, but it keeps the valve cover or anything else that's pretty looking on the engine from being scratched.

Update. The engine is out. 4 big jackstands did the job. the engine cleared the spoiler with barely 1/4" of room!!! Talk about cutting it close. Also found out why the car died. Turned out there was a 3 in. hole on the side of the block around the air condi. compressor area!! Think the bearing seized up since I have been hearing a high pitch noise coming from the bottom few weeks ago. Now gonna have to see how good is the engine that Soshinusa sent. Want to thank Nitelife for pointing me to the site.
