Power steering eliminator kit?

Pat, I know you could make many sales if you made a powersteering eliminator kit. Some bearings, a block of steel and a pully would sufice. just an idea, as I do not have the means to make such an item.

lol, its a little bit more envolved than a block of steel and some bearings....but I have been thinking of something along those lines.

It sold like hotcakes when some other company made it. I can't remember who sold them, but if you could get ahold of one you could make one off that.

From what i recall, just looking at the PS pump and its internals...the problem lies in the shaft to hold the pulley, IIRC its a splined shaft, so that being said, I would have to collect some old units to reuse the main shaft. I dont have the means to create the splines on there. So, yeah, thats the tough part, and knowing nissan, they probably used some trick bearing in there that isnt quite off the shelf...but ill take a look at it, possibly in the spring time.

Pat, if you are interested; let me know b/c I'll probably be taking off my PS eliminator kit and I could send it to you for comparision - or you can trade me a couple pieces that I'll need afterwards.

I'm leaning towards late January or February to jump into that project.

The pump doesn't rely on the ATF fluid for lubrication, IIRC its a sealed bearing.

If I'm reading P@'s mind, I think he is concerned with the pulley attaching to the block of metal/mounting point. I think he means the pulley attaches to a splined shaft, so getting something to attach to the stock pulley would be a PITA for him. My kit used an aftermarket pulley, so it just bolted up.

edit: P@, weren't you thinking of doing underdrive pullies (or am I crazy)? Would it be possible to make them for the eliminator kit and make stock replacement under drives - same outside, but just adjust the inside for stock, etc. Or too much of a PITA w/ the others on the market?

Josh

I was just thinking that if he could find a pully that is press fit, or make one w/o the splines he could sell the whole thing with his pully....

i had always thought a belt tensioner between the crank and waterpump pullies would be the way to go

The RTR eliminator used the ac compressor idler pulley PN 11925-1E400 ( i believe) and it just bolted to his Aluminum block that took the dimensions and mounting points of the pump, and wallah just a sealed bearing pulley mounted to the OE tensioning bracket.

the only issues really were the few different power steering pump brackets.

shouldnt all the PS brackets be the same, or are there differences between the high/low port configs...

chuck has a good idea too, a tensioner between the crank and wp pulleys....the problem...is there enough room there, and talk about a short belt

If I recall, the RTR blocked worked on all the SR20's. Mine has been on a lowport and a highport without any issue.

i think the issue was with GTIR engines, they have a diff PS bracket, unsure if the BB and Aveneirs have compatible brackets or not.

you wouldn't necessarily have to use a water pump pulley.

an eliminater kit just needs to put tension on the belt, either pushing on it or pulling on it (as the ps pump does)

if it is pulling on it, any 4 or 5 rib pulley would work. the size doesn't really matter because it's just freewheeling.

if it's pushing, a smooth pulley would be needed. like in a serpentine belt set up.

of course if we could get a drop-in electric waterpump ......................................

well, most people will want a pulley close to the size of the PS pulley itself, just cause they dont want to change belt sizes...

Yeah, a drop in electric pump would be way cool
