CS - Guaging Interest, Oil Pan Temp Sender Thingy

So, think you guys would be interested in something like this?

Its a bung...yes I sad bung... to place an oil temp sending unit directly in the lower pan. It would require a 9/16" hole to be made, this hole would need to be pretty accurate, and not deform the pan for the sealing washer to work properly. Greenlee makes a cool knockout punch for doing this in sheet metal. Just drill a starter hole and use this punch to get the finished hole without deforming the pan.

There would be a sealing washer (possibly teflon) included with this...im currently sorting that out..along with a retaining nut and lock washer that will be tightened from the pan side to keep it from vibrating loose.

As we all know, having the temp sensor in the pan is the best place to put one...this would sort of make it a bolt in kind of solution. Im shooting for a price range of $20-$25.

I might include a small rental fee for the use of a knockout punch im getting to test this out. If I do get a tool that gets passed around, there would be an additional *deposit* for the use of the tool. You know refundable upon return....

So what do you guys think? All comments and suggestions welcome.

Well Pat, I think that....

It is about time you trid to reach a broader audience than the susual hardcore forum members...

Your "creations" are so cool that I believe they would make a great market on their own directd towards less DIY-mechanically savy people, if you took some time during your next vacations to "package them" in nicely rounded solutions for everyone!!!

Just put a target in writing and "presenting" a range of solutions for say "Gauge Installation", or whatever... you could show hot to do such thing with your items AND readily available complementary components and put it in your site. Say, a "Basic 1-2 gauge" thing for N/A engines, a similar fot TB engines and so-on...

I know from reading your threads that you have done this "exercise" several times in the past to see what might be a candidate item for CS-production so I seriously think you would be well rewarded if you did it "commercially"...

Examples of knowledge that can be put into "products/solutions" for sale abound.... Which of the two radiator addons you have is best for [N/A-TB/etc.] pricewise, installation-wise, etc? And in what combination with other CS goodies?

Hate drilling oil pans. To bad you couldn't make 1 that you install in the drain plug location. No drilling no hassle.

i'd be interested in one of these. i tried finding an m12x1.25 to 1/8" npt adapter, so i could use the stock oil temp sender location on my gtir motor, to no avail. though i'm iffy about the increased potential for oil leaks, i'd still like to be able to run an oil temp gauge on this motor.

Thanks for the recomendation to take my stuff to the next level. Ive definatley thought of doing that. The issue (at least with products that involve hose and hose ends) are the different configurations that people will run the items...All that set aside, packaging up the different units to make a one-size type of product is defiantley dooable...I guess ebay would probably be the best marketing place to generate hits on my regular site (gotta finish that too). Hum....i guess i should get off my ass and tackle this to become a real *player* in the biz.

Making one that will fit in the stock drain location isnt difficult, just not ideal. Personally Id hate to remove a sender just to drain oil. In addition there isnt any room to make the port for the sender in the stock 12x1.25 thread...I illustrated this in another post, but here it is.

I think I've got a couple pics at home if my description isn't very clear.

looks good.

Edit: there are both M12x1 and M12x 1.5 to 1/8" NPT adapters on the market......so whats the problem with making the in-between?

i'm ready to buy at any time. i'm also thinking about picking up one of your water neck thingies, but i don't need the water feed line. all i need is the 1/8" npt port. would you have any without the feed port drilled out? can i have one sent to me with a plug for the feed port instead of the an fitting? whatever the case, thanks for thinking up all this crazy stuff.

Okay guys here it is installed with instructions..

First, remove and clean your lower oil pan.

I center punched the place where i wanted the bung to go...

Now drill a 1/4" hole...

This is the greenlee 9/16 knockout punch, you can buy this for about $40, less on ebay if your lucky...

Knock out the hole to the larger size...

Deburr if you feel like it...

Here is the oil temp bung thingy, complete with teflon sealing washer and nut for the inside of the pan. Teflon is the ideal sealing washer due to its high heat resistance. Overkill maybe...nothing but the best for you guys.

Install until the teflon washer starts to crush...I would highly advise putting loctite 272 (450* resistance, oil can get up in the 250-260*F range) on the nut to keep it from working its way loose...that would be a bad thing.

I tried using a split locking washer, but it didnt fit...ill have to find a different style lock washer.....hum.....I do think the loctite should hold up...but ill source a different lock washer in the mean time. If your feeling frisky, you can add some RTV to the hole, I highly doubt youll need that ***.

Temp sender installed, make sure you use a wrench on the fitting so it doesnt spin.

Inside view...

Another view....you can see the oil temp sender sticking out about 1/8", this is just hand tight, fully tightened it sticks out around 1/4"-5/16"

Notes: This is super easy to install, literally took me 10 minutes with the right tools. I would also suggest sanding the paint off the oil pan on the inside and some off the top of the oil pan so it gets a good ground connection for the sender, if not, youll have to run a seperate ground to it somewhere.

I also filled the pan with water to see if it leaked any.....zero leakage, plus the pan isnt under pressure so this is a good test.

Yeah, thats about it...after instaling this, price will be $25 shipped priority mail. Enlarging that teflon washer hole to the correct size is a major PITA.

i did it to mine and it was a pain to get threads in the bung and tightening and making sure it dont leak ... i would get this product incase just to have it around...

heres how mine looks, i would not reccomend my method cause it was hard to find the aluminum chunk then to tap thread and find the right washers and silicone so it leak .

P@t: I'll take one: I have to change the gasket anyways, sincd I saw a little sweating, so I might as well bolt in the bung at the same time.
Just let me know when...

I'll take one too! Hey, maybe I can arrange for the some of the G20.net members (SOG's) that are local to me to pick these up and have you ship them all to one address. I'm sure all the boyz with boost want/should add an oil temp gauge to their rides....trinispeed, G_Rider, ChronicG, Loco, etc...... I'll work on them to see who I can round up!

Actually P@, Have you posted this offer over on G20.net as well?
