How To: Solid Shifter Bracket.

Pre-Install: I had backed out of my friends driveway and as I shifted into reverse, the shifter mount broke and my shifter was resting on my exhaust. It appeared that the little rubber piece in the middle of the bracket, wore away and broke off.

In side car. Shifter is lowered a lot!

Under car. Rubber piece had broken away from mount.

Tools Needed: Drill with multiple sized bits, 12mm wrench (I used a racheting), Air tools help.

Parts: 6 Washers, 3 Nuts, 3 Lock Washers, 3 Bolts, 1 steel block (will have to cut to size).

First I took off the 2 nuts (one on each link) of the 2 shift linkages.

Next I drilled the bolts out of the little plate under the shift boot. There are 2 weired looking bolts near the back of the plate that I drilled out. You will replace the bolts with better, longer bolts.

With the linkage out, I replaced the old, worn out spring, with a new one. I also drilled a hole on the other side and put another spring on.

New hole.

Dual Springs.

I then got a block of steel and cut holes into it. The block was about 4in (w) x 3in (h) x 3/4 - 1in (deep). To find where you want to bolt the shifter into the block of sttel, measure the rubber section to the screw. It was about 3/4 inch from the top. After that, I went to the bottom of the block and drilled through about 1/2 in up, so my shifter would sit lower. This makes it 4-way adjustable (Higher than stock, stock, low, lower). I then aligned the plate with the top of the block and marked where I needed to drill. I drilled through the top and bottome so the screws could go in to mount.

Cutting holes to mount block.

Mounting holes.

Hollow in center.

Front of the block. The holes are where you mount the shifter.

Now it was time to install. I put the linkage back in the front. Then I bolted the block of steel where the old bracket mounted. I put better screws into the plate on the top and ran them through. It is a good thing to have someone hold the top screws, so you can tighten the nuts. Also, use lock washers. You then line the shifter up to the hole you want to put it in and put a screw through and tighten it down.

Note: I took off the entire center console so it would be easier for everything.

Center console off.

Final product.

That is the bolt that mounts the shifter into the block.

Now you have a great feeling shifter. It sits lower and shifts much smoother. I have not grinded gears as much and I shift much faster. Thats all. Now go mod your shifter. Sorry for the quality of the pictures. Hope it works for you guys.

Note: Some people have experienced over 30 whp gain with this mod.

Bump. I've seen this in person. It's fu*king kool. It's like 2, maybe even 3 inches shorter. (the shift knob is closer to the center console).

Pretty sweet. Props for a young kid using his head and making something like this.

Nice Shawn.

looks cool. the shifter feel "notchier" now?

i never liked ultra short shifters though. its a long enough reach from the steering wheel to the shifter as it is. i feel like i have to reach into the bottom of the car to shift with short shifters.

It sits lower and I have a B&M. It feels great. I love how it feels and I never punch my cd player while shifting anymore :-)

I didnt see any weight on mine. What part are you looking at? There is a piece shown on mine at the beginning which is the rubber that was the old "bracket."

Nope, it works fine. I added that to make it a little bit more stiff. Im not sure if it really helped much though.

what part of modding it makes it physically shorter? would it be possible to buy a bigger block of steel and make it the right height?

I made 2 holes for where you mount the shifter to. (Look at the picture) Depending on which side you make the top hole. Since the holes are not exactly the same from the sides on both sides you have 4 different heights. And the shifter is not really shorter, it just sits lower so you dont move your hand as far. And to make it where it is supposed to be stock, you would just find which hole looks about stock height for the shifter and mount the shifter into that hole.

Hmm interesting and simple to do. But by removing that rubber you are using the shift stabiliser linkage as a torque member. Movement of the engine normally makes the shifter move...that's what the rubber is for. Now any engine movement will transfer to those two bolts attached to thin sheet metal...the only thing allowing movement now is the shift stabiliser bushing.

With regard to the weight/damper...you can see it on my car in this pic..

I dont feel any movement in the shifter and I have had this for a while now. It works great for me. Even people who have seen it in person like it. I am willing to make some for people if interested. PM me if interested.

You won't feel movement now, but before, whenever the engine rocked back/forth, that rubber allowed the movement. Now any movement of the engine is restrained by the metal piece bolted to thin sheet metal...

Its not really very thin. I can see where you are going with this, but I dont really find a big problem with it moving much.
