Low fuel mileage

I just picked up a 92 Sentra SE-R to use mainly as a commuter and i'm only getting about 17MPG. I get into it now and again but i don't think it should be this low? My 91 300ZX Twin turbo sits in this area of mileage so this just doesn't seem right to me. What on the SR20 do you all recommend looking at first? Any help would be great, i'm not real familiar with the motor. I plan on doing plugs, wires, rotor and air filter next weekend and seeing what that does but it seems it's still really low. Thanks all.

Reground your maf, wires, plus check your cat it might be clogged. Change your fuel filter. Plus o2 sensor could have a little something to do with the problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks, i was going to try regrounding my maf this afternoon but some jackass popped my passenger window last night so i went to the junkyard this afternoon and sinched that up. Suprisingly, there was another SE-R in the junkyard. Wish i had the cash to pull all the trim parts i needed. Anyways, i'm going to dump a few hundo into the car this next pay period and get her up and running well. I forsee another project car when i had only intended using it as a day to day. I was very impressed with it after driving. It's almost like a Mini Z32 =)

I'm having roughly the same problem, about 17mpg on a 91 nx2k. I have a brand new o2 sensor, new high-flow cat and catback, and I adjusted the TPS to spec. I still need to probe the MAF voltages, and check the coolant temp sensor, but I can't figure out what else. Maybe fuel filter...

I just reground my MAF and it went down from .92Mv to .3Mv. It seems to idle a bit better and the throttle response is marginally better. What i'm really hoping for is an increase in fuel mileage.

Uhhhg. Im having really bad millage as well. Here is my situation, tell me what you guys think.
My gauge is all over the place. One minute it reads one eighth of a tank the next minute it could read over a quarter. (Yeah when im on hills, but also when im not.) Where do I check to see if the reader of how much gas I have, to see if its bad? I know I dont have a gas leak in the lines. Isnt there a code that goes off if there is a change in pressure in the line? My EGR is clogged and I know I need to clean that out. (Code is comming up for that)CEL is on for it.
First of all, my TPS could be all out of wack. I dont know how to position it where it needs to be. I messed with it when I was younger. How do I position it correctly? (Thread Link possibly?)

I have had the original cat on my car since ive owned it. Im sure it the original cat. How much of an effect would my gas millage have if it was an original cat with 150k on it? I have already replaced the O2's last year and I have replaced the fuel filter. The spark plugs are all original so I know I need to replace those and maybe the wires. Do I really need to replace the wires? Or just the plugs? Ive had my buddy Blair advance the timing. Would timing kill my millage if im running at least 91. I think I filled it with 94 before I put her away for the winter. I know my air filter needs cleaned and that could contribute. How do I reground the MAF??????? (Thread for that maybe please?) All help would be great.

You should re-evaluate the car after you do all the stuff you know is wrong. Sounds like you have it all pretty figured out dude. Its little stuff with these cars that will make a world of difference.. I know when my car was getting 17 mpg, I just took it to a shop and they did a major tune up (belts and stuff) they might not have done a good job, but I got my mileage back..

Timing won't kill mileage, but you should really be at 15 while diagnosing these problems.

Oh and those gas tank problems are no big deal. I think everyones car does that stuff. The way I figure after the e light is solid long enough then I have about 1 gallon left. And don't park on a hill because you might have trouble starting it back up...

Oh doesn't matter how your TPS is, as long as the wires aren't hitting the top of the hood. I remember I didn't have it down low enough (had a CAI installed too) and I did a little driving and hit a big bump and my car cut out, and went into lean/safe mode, which basically feels like you're running on two cylinders .. but I pulled over patched up the cable, rotated the TPS so that it wouldn't hit the hood (rotated it w/ plug downwards) regardless - it doesn't matter how its positioned.
