Working with my boss to get the forums hosted at work through a separate SDSL line. We have our internet access via a 384k SDSL line. I first proposed to him to let me host the forums at work through a separate SDSL line that would not be connected in any way to our internal network and that would be paid for 100% by donations of the forum. I proposed that letting me do this would be a great learning experience for me because I would learn to be responsible for an internet datacenter (however small) in terms of it's security, uptime, and the software and OS's technical aspects. He came back and said that he would be willing to pay for it if it was close to the very cheap price that we pay for DSL right now. We want to expand out IS department in the future to do things similar to this so he thinks is a valuable enough learning tool for me that he's willing to pay for it, similar to taking a class or whatnot.
I've got a proposal for him and will let ya'll know what happens. If it comes through, the best box I have to host the forums off of it a 200MHz Pentium Pro Gateway box with a 4GB hard drive. I don't have any idea what the server requirements for the forum would be or if this box will be adequate or not. Your opinions?
Also, what OS should I use to host the forums? I would prefix a *nix variant for stability and power, and preferably linux or FreeBSD since they are free. I have fresh install of Redhat 7.3 sitting on that PPro200 box right now. Think that will work?
I did try installing PHP and MySQL on a linux box at home a few months ago just to learn to install vBulletin (it requires these two things) but was not quite successful. Anyone have experience installing these items on *nix system that could lend me a hand?

wish i had experience in vbuliten, all of mine is with UBB. but i dont know if that box will handle the load. i know on our ubb box its atleast a gig processor with atleast 512 meg of ram, think we bumped it up to atleast 1.5 gig of ram. these boards are really entisive. id look at taking up some more donations and building or buying a new box for it. on setting it up using a *nix, thats a bit difficult but can be done. there should be tons of faq's on it around the net. i know we got mysql running just fine on our linux box, now php i dont remember. like i said boards are processor time hogs, but usualy use very little bandwidth.
That's what I was thinking. With all the computer freaks on here, similar to the Metro, I was thinking people would have enough spare parts to build a decent server. Anyone have spare parts to lend?
I will ask my boss along with the proposed monthly bandwidth charges if he'd be willing to pay for some box with it. I like getting boxes off of www.compgeeks.com. See anything there that would work?
hmmm i dont know if id go prebuilt or not. id build it myself or atleast buy a componet system. we just bought a p4 1.8gig with 512, 2 40 gig drives raided on an msi board, black alum enlight rackmount case for work for 900 dollars. nice machine ive worked on getting win2k advanced server working on it.
oh asked around, most distro's of linux has php and lots of times mysql with it. calum's dad said he installed mysql on our linux box using rpm's and it worked great. rodney says he put php on it when he installed linux. since i just gave a friend my spare mobo im not going to be installing linux on a spare box anytime soon, well got my 166 i could slap it on i guess.... or lindsey's ppro 150.
Hey Ben, Steve (98sr20de) just PMed me and told me about this thread. To make a long story short...What do you need? If you need or want it I probably have it. I had six PC's at one time and four were dual procs. I still use two of them, but possibly going to go to one. Sorry for the late reply but just got off of work and gettingready to go back in! What is wrong with me!? I get home at midnight and I get to get back up at 4:30am. I need a life! Ben call me at 757-685-3925 (cell) until 5:30pm or after that call me at 757-490-4894 (home). Or we can go behind door #3 Monty...(old game show you know)...just shoot me an e-mail to modoc3@cox.net
As far as the system recs. on Vbulletin I'm not quit sure. If someone can point me in the direction of the manufacture of the product perhaps I can find out some more. I personally would run a *nix version because of the low horsepower reqs to run it and its' above all STABLE. Let me know if I can help in anyway...as in providing legal copies of software, hardware or my time in helping you configure it. I work with a guy that is SUPER smart with Linux. Knows Linux better then I know Novell from what I can see. And that is saying something I think.
Let me know and good luck,
Sterling

Although, I talk to it and let her know that she is still my number 1
Well I successfully loaded MySQL, PHP, and vBulletin onto my work PC (the PC I'm typing on) which runs Win2k Pro. I forwarded port 80 to my PC and had Eric try it. He thought it was ok. I installed RedHat 7.2 at home last night and I couldn't quite get there as the installation and making everything fit together in linux is a little more confusing. I will spend more time on that though. I have Win2k Server and Advanced Server hanging around, but I'd much rather run my system off a free OS rather than a non-free OS.
I will present the offer to my boss on Monday for the bandwidth at least. Wish I could run the forums off my box at least at the beginning (P4 1.7GHz 256MB RAM) but, alas, Win2k Pro only allows for concurrent 10 users to log into the website, and that just won't do. I could upgrade it to Win2k Server, but I really don't want to deal with the licensing and stuff with that- rather have the good, clean, reliable, and free OS of linux.
Oh hopefuly this weeekend Ill be installing a linux distro on my p166 at home for my own webserver. But everyone here says getting mysql and php running is easy on our server we have here, which i think is redhat 7.2 or such. Im goign with a small distro of linux, no redhat or mandrake since this comp has like the crappiest of hardware in it.
Ok. The SDSL line here at work is a GO! Now I need a decent box for the forums and a little help installed PHP and MySQL on a Linux box. Who can help me out?
i loaded up mandrake 8.2 this weekend, it has php and mysql already in there in the options of stuff to install. now i havent tested it yet, dang bad network cable, but it is running. i didnt have my tools with me so couldnt make another cable to hook it up to the net with. so by tuesday ill have my server up on the net i hope then we can go ahead and put some software on it to test mysql and php install if you would like. guess i should set you up an ftp account sometime too...
