UPS Shipping guide, by David George:
UPS GROUND SHIPPING
1. Anything not encased in a full corrugated (cardboard) box, anything that has two sides over 30", or one side over 60" is subject to a $5 surcharge
2. Any box whose length + girth exceeds 84", but is less than 108", and weighs less than 30lbs will be billed at 30lbs, even if it actually weighs 2 pounds. This is oversized 1.
3. Any box whose length + girth exceeds 108" but is less than 130" and weighs less than 70lbs, will be billed at 70lbs. This is oversized 2.
4. Any box whose length and girth exceeds 108" but is less than 165", and weighs less than 90lbs, it will be billed at 90lbs. This is oversized 3.
5. There is a $50 surcharge on unauthorized packages. An unauthorized package is one that weighs over 150lbs, OR one whose length + girth exceeds 165", OR a package that exceeds 108" in length. You want to avoid this at all costs.
Anything that doesn't fall in this catagory will be billed at the actual weight of the package.
UPS AIR SHIPPING (3-day Select, 2nd Day Air, Next Day Air), Domestic Only
1. #1 above still applies, and i THINK #5 still applies, i'll have to check on that
2. The package will be billed by the dimensional weight, or the actual weight, whichever is greater. To find dimensional weight, use the formula (L * W * H)/194.
3. Letters and paks will be billed at the actual weight, dimensional weight doesn't apply to letters and paks.
The actual charges will vary upon where the package is located and where it is going and what service you choose. So now you'll know why a package weighing 2 lbs can potentially cost the same as a package weighing 90. It's not just about weight, it's about size. ESPECIALLY when shipping through one of the air services.
