i assume your welder is turned all the way up, now you just need to turn the wire feed down. looks like it was spitting.

either that, or you were smoking while welding again...

Yes. For aluminum, you run straight argon. For mild steel, you
run C25 which is 75% argon, and 25% CO2. For stainless, you
run a mixture of mostly helium, some argon, and IIRC, 5% CO2.

You of course change wire as well.

as said, argon only for Al. I've also used straight argon for mild and ss, though I've heard that tri-mix is much more forgiving than argon at ss. Also, CO2 generally gives deeper penetration for the same bead width compared to straight argon

You guys should check out Welding Technology Fundamentals by William A. Bowditch and Kevin E. Bowditch http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

It's the book we used for the welding class I took at a local community college. It covers all different kinds of welding, including MIG, TIG, and oxy acetylene. Its great book whether you know nothing about welding, or to just use as a reference. Its got charts on stuff like what type of shielding gas to use, what filler rod, etc.

Actually this is the one I had to grind out the weld and redo. I had the polarity set backwards and didn't figure it out until I was already done with it. The other one was already on the car so I didn't take pics of it. That one came out almost perfect. That is where the spitting came from. sh*t these were only the second thing I ever welded.
