best welder for under $400

I have been searching for a welding machine I am not for certain of which one to get either a HOBART 135 amp handler 135 mig welder or Chicago Electric welding systems 170 amp 230 volt flux & mig welder. I want one that is able to weld turbular manifolds, exhaust, and working with sheet metal/ aluminum. I was looking on harborfreight website http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...292&pricetype=
What would be the best bang for the buck for what I am looking for.

Neither of those is likely to work well with aluminum. To mig aluminum you'll need a spool gun and I doubt you can get one for either of those.

if you get a liner for you lead thats .001 or so larger than the filler metal your using you can mig aluminum like that, it just has a tendency to nest on you.

they come in sizes corisponding(sp?) with your wire size, they go inside the lead, which is what your gun is attached to, sorry if you know what im talking about, just trying to explain it.

If your gonna be doing a lot of aluminium, look for a TIG welder, unfortunatley that will put you over the $400 range.

The 8" wire adapter is not a spool gun, those normally run in the $500+ range depending on the welder. Also, do your research and if you do get a mig, make sure you can add a spool gun onto it later. Some of the smaller modles usually dont.

I personally swear by Miller products...if you can afford them, they are WELL worth the money.

With the tig welder can I still weld exhaust, manifolds, sheetmetal, and aluminum. what would be the price for one and what is the difference between the mig and tig?

Lincoln Electric or Miller if you have the money but Hoabart is the best value, IMHO.

So the one that I mentioned would do the job. Oh yeah would that also work on bodyparts like welding a hole up?

Yes you can still weld all of that. TIG is much more expensive. Instead of having a wire go through the gun, you hold the filler metal in one hand, and the torche with a tungsten (TIG=tungsten inert gas) electrode in the other. I find TIG easier to do. I hate setting up the wire feed speed and all that stuff on MIG.

no, but after the second time it birds nests, you'll wish you had one. You can do a whole lotta things, but it's a lot more likely he buys an aluminum kit, can't make it work, gets frustrated and e-bays everything for a serious wallet mugging - then swears off any diy car sh*t for life.

for the original ?, just forget about aluminum for now, buy a hobart 135 (pref. used), get comfy with it, then re-evaluate your welding needs when your experience and wallet will allow. And don't forget to read that "mig for priveate use" thread - lotsa good info

A note about Hobart and Miller...

They are owned by the same company and in most cases, both made on the same line. No joke. The Hobart just substitutes some plastic parts for some of the cast metal parts in the Miller.

Geo just took the words right out of my mouth. If you're looking at a Hobart, buy the Miller equivalent and save some money. Cheapest TIG I've seen is around $1000 new. There's some used ones on eBay that can be had for less but many of them are monsters and are pretty beat looking.

No chance that you will ever produce a nice tube mani with a chicago electric rig. You can buy the hobart Handler 140 for $450 right now at Farm and Fleet. Don't even try welding with the flux, it is teh suck. Just buy gas.

Buy a Tig and make sure the "Duty Cycle" is good. Or you will be having a cooling period of 10mins between welding.
For the most part if you get a Tig you can pretty much weld it all.
