Make sure that the floor is clean and you etch the floor with acid. Nissan Performance Mag. has a great write up on it.

Sams Club sells this stuff at a good price, I think. It's ~$70 for 250sq feet (you'll prolly need 2 for a 2 car. Go to www.samsclub.com and put in the keyword epoxy.

Get Rust-Oleum® EpoxyShield Garage Floor Coating Kit it's comes in the 2 1/2 floor kit.. and it's $99.

I had mine professionally done. They stripped my floor, washed it then rolled the coating. After that they sprinkled light flakes to it. Said and done $875. Lifetime guarentee. Not the home depot kit that flakes and peels.

We bought our house last august and I did the floor shortly thereafter. The house and therefore garage floor was built in '61 so there were some decent cracks. I bought tubs of the concrete resurfacer stuff and patched over the cracks and pitted areas of the floor before I epoxied. It has held up just fine and there are no signs of any new cracking.

Preparation of the floor is very important on older surfaces. I started out with sweeping and then hosing it out. I followed that with a good TSP and intense brushing. After that I used muriatic acid to etch and prep for the epoxy. It worked great but took a week to do everything properly including drying time.

I used the house brand floor kit at Lowes and it worked fantastic. It was about $15 less than the rustoleum brand.

Good Luck!!!

What about brand new garages? My house is going to be finished in November and I am going to do some preventative maintenance... Epoxy floor, seal grout, blah blah. I'm guessing that it is going to be clean after a spray down. Then what? Does the acid etching materials come with the rustoleum kit?

Make sure that they DON'T apply sealer to the concrete. It will make your refinishing efforts a lot harder because you have to strip the floor first, etc. It's a big pain from what I hear.

you still need to etch it with the muriatic acid (use a respirator!).

The company that makes that stuff is actually right there in Marietta or somewhere in your neighborhood, you *might* be able to snag it cheaper direct (if they'll sell it to you).

$875 was a decent price. I have a new house with a three stall garage. I went to the annual home and garden show and got the show discount. Thats the best way to get deals for your house. They honor those prices sometimes a month after the show. I was told that older homes can cost quite a bit due to older concrete and crackes. They also have to clean the floor, and older homes have nasty garage floors.

the problem with using muriatic acid with the new garage is the driveway is colored and has already been sealed.

any ideas?
