Hi guys just trying to get a comparison of tool prices (particularly Snap-On) from little old New Zealand to you guys in the States. How much do the basics cost for you lot....
Such as:
Snap-On 17 piece socket set 317AMMPC for us $1000 NZ or $700 US
Snap-On 19 piece wrench set VOM819 for us $1250 NZ or $885 US
Comparisons would be really good guys, look forward to your feedback.
Thanks
Tim

A lot of us use Craftsman instead of Snap-on.
Craftsman is a lot cheaper, easy to purchase and it has life-time warranty.
I'll say it 90% as good as Snap-on, but at a fraction of the cost, no complain.

Two Classic SE-Rs, Twice the money-pit
In my experience, the snap-on guys here will come down a little from the MSRP, especially if you are buying multiple items, but not much. Maybe 10%. Your prices are insane. Event at US prices I feel that their tools are nice, but rarely worth the money. I second the recommendation of Craftsman. Unless you are a professional mechanic, you will never really need the difference in quality. I have (well, had, since they were stolen last fall) a few snap on items, mostly heavily used items like ratchets. All my sockets and wrenches were craftsman. It's also a lot easier to get a replacement if something goes wrong with craftsman (if you have a sears nearby anyhow). I loved my 3/8 and 1/4 ratchets though:
Yeah well thats the thing... no Sears... good tools not readily available. I'm trying to build up a set that will last for as long as I will need and should I break anything be able to get it replaced. I have 3 Stahlwille socket sets but am looking to get more of everything. It appears you lot get it significantly cheaper than we do... sucks!!
BTW, I bought the items above and a few other items from a local Snap-on truck.
Totalled at about $1000, I did not get any discount at all.
Only thing he gave me was a friendly/courteous service and a free T-shirt.
It's just extremely dangerous to your wallet everytime you venture onto the Snap-On truck....
wow, i never knew snap on was so much. theres a guy that has a big ol snap on box van in front of his house on the next block. it be worth it to straight up jack him huh?

You will be amazed how much one of those trucks worth when it's packed with new tools.

Yeah, but tool guys are mostly CRAZY, it might be nice until he uses a BFH to break your knee caps and plants your crippled ass onto a creeper!
My dad sells tools and I am surprised at the markup, MOST items are not marked up as much as I thought they would be. Granted there is markup there, but it isn't like jewelry.

haha use them vice grips on my fingers and sh*t.
but damn he just leaves it there out in the street at night...
its cool though i get 10% off of anything at sears. craftmans is good enough for me. yall know UTI students get like 30% off on Snap on parts while they're in school.
I use alot of Powerbuilt stuff and have never broken any yet (3 engine swaps and god knows how many rebuilds/motorbikes etc later), otherwise I also have some king tony, blackhawk and JRS stuff. The JRS stuff is tough as and well priced, good valve if ur after a 3/4inch set but hard to find unless you go to some industry type shops.
Let me know what your after and I will see what i can price up for you. Get access to all kindas of deals.

WHAT? I can't think of any 17 piece socket set being $700 from snap on.Nor a wrench set being $885. I buy snap on tools all the time and the only socket set that would be that expensive would be a huge 1" drive set. I don't know anyone that uses 1" drive, rarely even a 3/4.

ebay is your friend for used Snap-On items. I would also look at Mac, Matco, SK, and KD Tools (makers of the GearWrench series). They were all respected and liked when I was a mechanic a few years back.
Personally I will only buy the above brands used unless I really really need a particular part to get a job done and I don't have time to shop. New they are all usually overpriced compaired with Craftsman.
They're all wonderful tools but don't think just because it has a preimum name on it that it won't break on you. They do from time to time. That's what the warranty is all about.
Certain brands do things slightly better than others and when you're a mechanic you often need a part for a specific job... so it's just the luck of the draw which truck shows up first to sell it it to you. It's very rare to find a mechanic with tools from just one brand. Most guys have a solid mix from all the major brands.
Having said all that, now that I am no longer a practicing mechanic, I have no need for the premium brands at premium prices. If I can find what I need used then I'll buy it, but other than that it's Craftsman and Sears all the way (not that I need much anymore).
Brad, what are you going to use to rebuild your Mexican SE-R... toothpicks?
I've never used any of the premium brands, so I couldn't even began to tell you what the difference is. For Father's Day this year, my wife bought me the the 260+ Craftsman set, complete with tool box. I no longer shop at Sears(long story), but it is a pretty good set. Only thing I'll spend more money on is a decent set of ratchets. The ones that come with the set are absolutely terrible.
Buy what you can afford. Previous to the Sears set, my wife had bought me a Stanley 60 pc set that folds in a zippered soft pack. Great ratchets, lousy sockets... it's now my emergency set that I keep in the car.
Peace,
Mark
