For those of you who do not know, I work at Sears in the Hardware Dept. Today at work I read about some of the upcoming tools due to be released within a weak, and I was blown away by a neat kit they have put together that allows you to powder coat at home in about an hour. Sears stores will be stocking 5-10 of the most popular colors, and an additional 250 colors will be available online at www.sears.com! The kit included 5 colors and an electric blower gun that is adjustable to the amount of powder you want to shoot on your surface. It really does look neat. It would be great for powder coating valve covers, wheels, and brake or motor parts! You do need a toaster oven, or some other non-cooking oven. The directions says it takes only an hour before it is fully cured and ready to go. The cost of the kit is $189.99 and seems to be a great deal. Keep yours eyes peeled for it at your local sears.
I have my own powder gun and and there is a lot more to it then people think.. Masking and preparation is critical, then you need an oven big enough for whatever you are coating. You can use IR heaters but, then you have to buy them .... It's easy for me to do powder coating because I run a thermal coating company and the parts we do get prepped in a very similar fashion.

Ta' heck with Sears. Go to Columbia Coatings http://www.columbiacoatings.com Their "Chicago Electric" powder gun (same as Harbor Freight sells, but CC's price is lower) comes in kits ranging from $70 to $155.
I've had it for 2 years now and done wheels and misc parts. Yes, you need to get the parts down to bare metal, preferably via bead blasting. I used to hire out the blasting, but have since bought a cabinet @ auction (see: http://www.xxiii.com/~wcox/garagepix/ ) I bought a used kitchen oven for $40. CC's "how to" book is also a good reference.

Too many cynics. Borgus doesn't make a cent off a sale of one of these things, 'cept maybe if he's on commission and a few go out the door in Columbus. Sears, for whatever its faults, does a decent job of producing decent tools for the halfway competent jackleg wrench for a lot less bux than SnapOn or Mac, which as near as I can tell a fair number of forum posters are not. For those who ARE halfway competent, including the sense to do the proper prep work, wouldn't take long at all to make up the cost, and for that matter help pay for it with the help of a few friends. Since I gave my SnapOn box to my kid to make his living, more than a few of the replacements are from that store (as well as HF and Ebay SnapOn :-) ). Cheapest is not always best. But THX to both Borgus and WOT.
I work at a Sears Hardware in Centerville, OH and I'd have to say that Craftsman makes decent stuff and carries some excellent brands, like Makita, etc. The hand tools at the price they are at can't be beat. Snap-On and MAC may make better stuff, but they also make a wider range of stuff too...there is no equivalent to the Solus plus in the Craftsman lineup of tools and I do get a more specialty tools from Snap-On, but for hand tools like ratchets, breaker bars, sockets, wrenches (God bless gearwrench) and screwdrivers I just shop where I work. I took the job at Sears 3 years ago when my first set of tools was stolen thinking that I would rebuild the collection, but I have since surpassed it bigtime...The powdercoating equipment would be nice to have, but in my case I wouldn't use it enough to justify the space or spending the money on it, so I just take my stuff to a friend or a professional. However, I just had my car up on jackstands the other day and the amount of rust just from being in Ohio has me considering powdercoating all the suspension pieces.

Very cool gottabfast. Glad to see I am not the only Sears employee here
Just so you know, Home Depot is launching a big program that their Husky line of hand tools now will be replacable at the counter...as is craftsman. Competition is good.
i started out with a hobby gun. But now i have a gema hopper system. So much better. The gema is $5000 plus you need to sandblast and bake your parts. It can get expensive fast.
