Does anyone have a DIY rig that safely exhausts fumes? I want to be able to start/idle for short periods when working inside. I was thinking I could install a dryer vent or something like that in one of the lower garage door panels. There are exhaust extraction systems you can buy like some shops have but they are $900! I wonder if I could get creative with a dryer exhaust hose and wrap it around the tailpipes, and from that go to the vent in the garage door.
Try it, but buy a CO detector for your garage, or a handheld combustibles meter and see if it is safe.
Yeah, that would be a good idea. Those are expensive, either.

The systems for sale all seem to have fans associated with them, so I'm wondering if there needs to be a small vacuum in the tube to pull it out. The backs of the cars will be within a few feet of the doors, so hose length shouldn't be as much of an issue I don't think.
CO detectors aren't that much, you can pick one up like a smoke detector probably in Wal-Mart even.
I have one, just don't remember where it came from, but it looks just like a smoke detector.
For the few feet, just get some aluminum dryer hose and run it from the tailpipe out the garage door.
OR you can do that, and also point a squirrel cage towards the door to insure you are blowing as much out as possible.

Matt, I would buy a cheap muffler tip from Pep Boys (or somewhere of the like) get some metal dryer hose and clamp it to the tip. When you're ready to work, just slide the cheapy muffler tip over yours and possibly run a bungee cord to a control arm to hold it in place. TADA, you're welcome.
My mechanic uses what looks like garden hose, with a few different homemade-looking fittings to go over different sized tailpipes. The hose runs to small circular cutouts in the garage door, a foot or so from the floor. I don't know if the holes have rubber plugs for when they're not in use or if they've got trapdoors or what, I've never looked that closely at them, but that might give you some ideas.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. Part of this is that I need to run my car on the coldest days to help heat the garage. The heater I have is completely inadequate on any night under 40 degrees. It's too small for the space and I haven't insulated anything yet.
Hey man, I run cars in closed garages all of the time. It must be ok, look at me.
EDIT: For those that took me seriously, don't. It's bad for your health, really.
John
Just make sure you don't have a test pipe. I can't run my car for long, even with the door open, before the CO detector goes crazy.
You should be able to make an extraction setup using a small box fan, HVAC ducting, and sheet metal.
