I cover the important sh*t like the alternator, intake, injectors etc...while the engine is COLD.....carefully apply engine foam cleaner to the metal surfaces only and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then rinse with a light spray, NO DIRECT STREAMS OF WATER. Repeat 3 times and use necessary detailing brushes to hit the tiny areas. Getting your engine bay to look real good is no easy task and you should really take your time, I would devote at least a solid afternoon to it. Inspect your engine compartment thoroughly before you start to make sure there are no exposed wires and vacuum lines. Have fun.

we have this degreaser stuff at work. i believe Winns make it. you just spray it all over the entire engine bay, let it foam up and then after it sit for about 10 mins you spray it all down and everything looks as if it were new. it shines all the hoses, and everything.
Motul products work the best, by far. They have their "MotoWash" that works really well as a degreaser, then they have some other product that's a dust repellant.
Degreasers smell like hell on earth. Things like Castrol Super Clean (or any other of the purple cleaners) etch aluminum.
I clean cars for my dad at his carlot, we use all "pro" products. all you do is spray degreaser on all but electrical thigs let it sit then you spray it off looks brand new, may have to repeat once or twice...
For most things, simple green and Rubber detailer work just fine. I clean the BAD grease, oil, dirt off with brake cleaner. No scrubbing, just falls right off, even baked on oil. Then I rinse it off. I also use a steam cleaner for tight areas, like beneath the distributor.
Most degreasers like castrol superclean, spray nine, greased lightning work well. Warm the engine (not hot, warm) cover important electrical items like the dizzy, maf, and put plastic bags in the spark plug galley on the VC. wet the engine, spray the degreaser and let it sit for about 10 mins. spray some more on then hose off. after you rinse, go over the spots that are still dirty with degreaser again and use a scrub brush or a wash mitt to get the tough to clean spots.
If your cheap, you can just get some simple green like I did... follow the people instructions above and your engine bay will look like this.
Sad thing is is once the engine was put back in I couldn't really see all the work I had done... My hoses are really what makes my bay look bad... Oh well

after you clean the hoses, shoot them with some spray silicone in a can. if you dont over do it, they will look great
