Car wont go into Gear..What the problem?

Ive searched and searched , and i couldnt find exactly what im looking for soo.. Heres the scoop....
I went to sears today to get me some new glasses, parked went in ..came out.. started car and back out of space. I drove about 200-250ft to stop sign and then came to a stop. I went to go back to first gear and nothing. With the pedal fully depressed i had nothing the car would try to roll a tad but wouldnt go in gear. I turned it off put it in gear and drove to the empy part of the lot. I popped the hood and checked the adjustment. it hadnt moved at all so im thinking then...WTF .. I got back in the car and tryed again, same thing wouldnt go in gear for sh*t... Checked and fooled with adjustment .. and finally it worked.. I then drove straight home. I had to work at 5 ,fearing for the worst i didnt drive the car. I Drove my other car. I got home about 12 or so and thought to try it since i was planning to drive it to school tomarrow(2 hours away) and i was thinking maybe it was just some freak thing. Same thing agian wont go in gear. I checked my fsm on this and found some specs but i think its just shot. I have a new clutch and 8.8fly to put in. But what could have caused this? I wasnt bashing on the car, so i dont get it. I guess its jut time for upgrade. Need some help on this one guys whats seem to be the problem? I wont have time to tear it down untill about thurs. So im asking this so i will know what to look for/ replace during the install. And is a new clutch cable reccomended for this install? Thanks for reading and comment's -Devin

Sounds like a clutch problem for sure. One scenario that I know is true with the symptoms you are having is if one of your clutch disc springs popped out and is wedged against the plate and the flywheel. It can work itself into a new spot and then allow you to get it into gear, then if it slings back into a bad spot your stuck again. Turn the car off and she goes into gear easy because the engine and transmission aren't running, therefor you don't need a working clutch to disengage. Clutch cable adjustment and pedal feel will feel exactly the same as a working clutch in this scenario.

Only way to tell is to open her up. Same thing happened to Matt Otlsund at the convention this year. We pulled his tranny and there it was. Check it out:

Pull the transmission once; every time after that one will be easy, once you learn where to look for the hidden things.

My problem was a spring on the clutch broke and my pedal fell to the floor had no feeling. get your clutch replaced.

yeah it wants to roll forward a littel bit and wont go into revers( it grinds) Ill post back in a few hours with the results of my finding's. I have a new clutch and my flywheel should be here either today or tomarrow i ordered the 8.8 from jgy. I wanted to get it from adfab but i called and he and they didnt have any instock, so i had to bite the bullet because i need my car for now. BUt none the less ill keep everyone posted. and thanks for the Help guys. Bye the way is there any special tools i need for the disassembly? also where a good place to get a clutch cable. from what i read nissan is the best, Ive read the adjustment on many aftermarket ones arn't as good? I read a post on a 97cent Brass reducer mod. If the nissan one is too expensive ill get a autozone one and go that route.- Devin

I used a pry bar, is your spindle disconnected from the ball joint or the strut and tie-rod?You almost need a strait prybar though, the angled ones don't work too well. One thing you may want to replace while you're in there is the clutch release bearing clips. They're like $1.50 and any reputable nissan dealer should have them. Also a new t/o bearing for good measure... Also don't forget to lubericate the t/o bearing rod/leaver arm.

yeah, now that i read it your right, ...<<<~~~ (grins) sorry about that, But the car drives well, but the clutch pedal is , about 2 inchs from floor. THe car shifts but i have to pick the pedal back up with my hand to get it to come all the way back up.And the adustment nut is is adjsted all the way up. But i still have no to clutch pedal travel.Im going to lowes now and try the brass reducer mod and see if it helps. and by the way, The flywheel mod is the best mod ive done. car revs like a danm sportbike, cool.. - Devin

old thread, but fits my problem... 3 weeks ago, i drove about 100ft then couldnt get into gear, would shift fine when car was off,, tried it about a week later and still the same(same roll forward while starting in gear etc), well i finally got my new clutch and went to my car and ordered a tow, while waiting i started it up and it went into gear just fine, was able to drive home.. since i already dropped 400 on the clutch im going to replace anyways, but can anyone tell me what the problem is/was?
