One lead goes to wire on the tps, the other lead goes to a ground.

Pull off the connector for the throttle position sensor, and read one of the leads as the other guys have said. At closed throttle the reading should be less than 1 kilo-ohm and at full throttle it should be at about 10 kilo-ohms I believe. I can't remember which one it is, though. By the way, instead of using the battery ground I believe you actually get a more accurate reading by using the ground terminal on the sensor.

I never did it been when I was searching for this answer I found that you leave the connector plugged in. Jam the probes into the back of the connector, one in the middle and it doesn't matter which wire the other one goes in. Turn the key to the on position but do not start it. Move the throttle from under the hood slowly and watch the volt meter. If you have the wires switched it won't matter you will just have a - in front of the number.

Again I state I never did this but found this info on g20.net. I will see if I can find the post.

0.4 to 4.0 on volts..
1K to 10k on ohms..

If you are getting different measurements, either you have to adjust it or your TPS is screwed and needs to be replaced.

BTW, the mechanical part in the TPS can be cleaned?

i think it would be so much better if someone who has done this before simply took their DMM and placed the probes in the correct location for testing then just took a pic. i plan on doing this soon and have a general idea of how to do it, but a pic is always worth 1000000000000000000 words.

OK,

I tested the TPS both ways. Doing resistance, I couldn't really get a good pic of the leads because I was using alligator clips. It's easier when you have them for doing the resistance, but you must make sure you don't have too much resistance through the clips. I had about 5 ohms.

Pic of the car in the garage :-)

Leads for resistance measurements. I used the center pin, and the one on top of that. Hard to get a good picture of this.

Resistance reading at idle. Notice the DMM range selection. Yummy, 997... One of my favorite numbers, aside from 993, and 917-30 :-)

Resistance at WOT. Notice again I've changed the range of the DMM.

Leads stuffed in the back of the connector to measure the voltage.

Voltage at idle.

Voltage at WOT.

When doing the voltage, the leads will pretty much just stay in the holes. Again, I used the middle pin, and the pin on top, but I connected the common (black) to the top pin and the red to the middle pin to get a "positive" voltage. It doesn't matter if you go the other way with it and get "negative" readings, but the positive numbers just make you happier.
